Sure you weren't drunk and grabbed a bottle of mineral oil instead? I have no idea what you are talking about with Gin being oily in consistency. Did you have the the $5 plastic jug version that just said "Gin" on the label?
 
I don't know how the fuck anyone can drink gin. IMO, there is no such thing as a "good gin." To me, it's all like drinking cooking oil.

im the same way with Jager. to me that is the nastiest shit ever! might as well get a bottle of NyQuil and robitussin mix them and call it Jager.

Nah, I've always thought gin had an oily finish to it. Searching "Oily gin" brings lots of hits that tell me I'm not wrong.

Hmm ok im coming around to your ideas. Gin may be one of those spirits that is acceptable to mix, even the top shelf stuff. Agree with your sugar bomb comment, gin doesnt lend itself to that type of cocktail. Usually the mixer compliments gin.

clear spirits are for mixing. if you want to sip, get something aged.
 
Can't stand gin by itself. Mixed with Cranrasberry and its good--especially if you use Bombay Sapphire. Brings out the spice.
 
I love gin based drinks for the simple fact that they typically aren't heavy sitting sugar bombs like many mixed drinks are. They are simple, yet interesting drinks that are easy sippers and don't give you a gut ache after two or three. And yes, they are at their best when it's very hot and humid.

Rangpur gin + tonic = YUM.
Doesn't non-diet Tonic water have more or less the same amount of sugar as soda?

By volume yeah it does. But you are usually only putting in a splash or two. Or at least I do. It's not a lot. Plus it's got quinine which is a bitter agent.

Yeah, I was gonna bring up the sugar in tonic water thing too. But I agree, a g&t is not really a sweet drink.

As far as gin itself, it's probably the only spirit that I like on its own. I can't get into whisky, hated every one I've tried, but for whatever reason, I enjoy gin on the rocks.
 
Gin is up there with the nastiest shit you could be drinking. My parents drink the hell out of gin (Gordon's with tonic). Shit is nasty bad.

Shots of Svedka all night long. Maybe with a coke chaser.

Mine only have a bad habit of drinking too much soda. My mom loves Pepsi. That's not to say none of them will have a beer, but it's not all that often. No, they're not some religious fanatics or some bull shit. LOL

I find Bombay Sapphire absolutely disgusting. Tanqueray is great, but a bit too sweet. Hendricks is fantastic but too spendy.

I like Beefeater and at $25/1.75l the price is right for mixing.

I need to try Costco's gin for $20/1.75L.

Bombay is just plain awful and the Tanq makes me a mean drunk.

Beefeater is the best everyday gin.

A large part of the tonic is also to slow down your consumption. Otherwise you're blotto after an hour.
 
Gin packs a punch...47% for Tanqueray. And you tend to mix them pretty stiff since Gin accounts for a large amount of the overall drink volume. Hell a Martini is basically 100% alcohol.
 
With Gin you are largely buying the botanicals and how it smells. Those aren't necessarily lost with tonic water so you can still tell a difference. You aren't drowning it in a pile of sugar or other flavors. Just simply diluting it a bit.

Thus I always grab Diet Tonic.

And I agree - good Gin CAN be enjoyed by itself or lightly dressed up like in gin martinis, but unlike other liquors, the complexities of gin can be appreciated with a mixer like tonic water.

I'll drink gin on the rocks from time to time, but I usually just go for the diet tonic water. I wish they had a natural calorie-free tonic water with stevia, but alas, I'll take what I can get.

Bad and good tonics still definitely stand out even with the sugar-rich tonic water, because it is definitely a very clean mixer.

I love me some Tanqueray. I do like Bombay Sapphire but am usually quite content with getting more Tanq instead. Definitely prefer Tanq over Beefeaters or Gordons.
 
Have you found a good diet tonic? I drink diet soda exclusively but have yet to find a diet tonic that doesn't completely destroy the drinks. If I'm drinking anyway I may as well just do it right.

Not sure how you guys mix your gin and tonics...but for me the cup is filled with ice. A full shot + healthy overpour of gin. Then another 3oz or so of tonic water. It's really not much. Tonic water is about 10 calories an ounce. It's around 2:1 Tonic to Gin and that tonic amounts to around 30 calories. Between the Gin, flavor of tonic and melting ice it's really not "sweet" like a typical mixed drink.
 
Makes a lot of sense, but there are no rules. Price is relative. If I were very rich (or a college student, apparently) I'd mix top shelf gin with Squirt.

If you're looking for mixing liquors, I think you'd be surprised by some of the least expensive. Don't feel that price is any indicator of taste. Above all, try and taste for yourself instead of falling for what is trendy.

I've drunk _many_ very inexpensive liquors on the rocks. Not as good as more expensive ones, but drinkable, nonetheless. A 1.75 liter bottle of Windsor Canadian is something like $15 locally. Great mixer, and not bad on the rocks. It just doesn't have the subtle complexities of many more expensive whiskeys.

If looking for a great inexpensive gin for mixed drinks, try Seagrams. A couple of my bartender (er "mixologist") friends swear by it.

Seagrams isn't bad, though it does have a bit of that rubbing alcohol bite to it. Avoid New Amsterdam like the plague. It's nasty.

My personal mix is, in a Old Fashioned glass, maybe like 6 or so skinny-style ice cubes from the ice cube maker, which is really hardly anything.

So then I pour liberally, usually so that liquor and ice volume ends up being about 1/3 to a 1/2 of the glass. This is probably two shots. Then I finish the glass with tonic.

I could try just adding less tonic, I know I'd like it, I just like full drinks because that means it lasts longer.

See, I have a problem (could probably stop right there 😀), where even with black russians (using Kahlua Midnight, which is basically 80 proof rum with coffee liquor, none of that weak syrupy shit! 😛), a strong drink which, with a little ice, ends up being about half the glass in volume in the same old fashioned glass... those tend to finish way to fast. I like to drink, something, all the time. I do drink a lot of water, so I'm used to the volume aspect.
