Question about Gamecube Compatibility in Wii

Mr. Miyamoto says that he thinks many Gamecube games are going to be "remade" for the Wii. But I thought that most (I'm assuming all first party Nintendo) games would be compatible for the Wii already. They already have a 8cm Gamecube slot built in. If these games are already compatible then why would they need to remake them?

I basically just care about Wind Waker, since I want to play it and don't want to buy two systems.

Remakes would take advantage of the better processing power of the Wii. Think of CS:S

The Wii is slightly better in terms of hardware. Check out the preview for the new Super Smash Bros, the graphics look considerably better.

I honestly wouldn't want smash brothers to look better than it does, unless sharper graphics makes it easier to see when players are at opposite ends of the map.

i heard you can play any old nintendo game on the wii by downloading them from a website and loading them directly to the system but since gamecube isnt that old the discs will probably work on the wii

is that a good thing? this may sound weird, but i liked Super Smash Bro. for the N64 better cause it was easier to see things. now with all the moving and the huge levels, it's more difficult.

and also, in terms of hardware, the wii and the gc are pretty much the same. the wii has a higher clocked version of the gc cpu. the games might be remade to take advantage of the wiimote. (i like combining the wii and remote) although it might not be such a good idea. wonder if you can use the old controllers.

He is talking about reconfiguring the older games to use the new control schemes. They would be re-released as low-priced Wii games.

The original Game Cube discs will be playable and will be the same games they were on the Game Cube.

Yes, there are for controller ports to connect Game Cube controllers.

More for the new fun of the controller than the graphics. I want a new f-zero bad, but I'll take a hacked f-zero x with a bit better graphics and a few more tracks in the meantime.

The games will work right out of the box, it even has standard controller ports...keep your wavebird.

Yeah, that's what I thought when I first heard it, better integration with the controllers. The Wii is supposed to have ports for the original GameCube controllers as well.

btw, I put my GameCube up for sale in my FS thread (see sig) so I can save up for the Wii, PM if interested :D

Bingo. He's merely saying that certain GC titles will be enhanced to use the Wiimote. Luigi's Mansion would be an obvious example.

cool. thanks for the clarification dudes. does anyone have information on whether the virtual console controller will be included in the package? or is it a separate purchase? seems like including the controller would provide an extra incentive to buy virtual console games.

Not really.

Hopefully, we'll know tomorrow.

Is there a show or something tomorrow? Just curious if there was a reason as to why we might know tomorrow as opposed to any other upcoming day. Thanks.

Tomorrow starts the Gamers Conference in Leipzig Germany. Nintendo will make some sort of Wii announcement at 115AM PST tonight/Wednesday morning.

Yes, there is a built-in emulator for all older Nintendo systems and the disc drive can accept both 8cm GCN discs and the 12cm discs that will be used for Wii games.

We don't know exactly what controllers are included yet, but I'd be sure to see the wiimote & 'nunchuck', it's the other one that I doubt will be included...but who knows.

The Wiimote is designed to accomodate "Virtual Console" games. If you look at a picture of it, the many body of the controller is very similar to a NES controller turn sideways. I would expect that you could also use a Game Cube controller (to play N64 games, for example) but I would not expect one to be included.
