I recently ordered DSL and they said that it would work. (Verizon) I got a call today saying that I live too far from the nearest call center. Who else besides AT&T provides DSL? (I just checked online and I don't think AT&T is over here yet.) I'm near Pismo Beach, CA if that helps. I'm tired of dialup and getting speeds like 28.14. :( lol

If you're too far from the CO, you're stuck with dialup or cable internet. Your cable TV providor can give you information about cable internet and if they offer it. DSL is dependant on how far you are from your local central office of the phone company (actually dialup is too to a certain extent), so if one company says they can't connect you with it, you won't be able to get it at all.

I already called the local cable company and the guy I talked to acted like he'd never even heard of cable internet. I asked him if they had that service and it took me forever to explain to him what it was.

You might look to see if IDSL is available, although it's expensive & slower than A/S DSL it's capable of longer distances (it runs over existing ISDN infrastructure).

Who is your cable company?

Is AT&T cable TV available in your area?

verizon said I was too far from the center too but they still sold me dsl anyways. I couldn't complain, it was better than dial up. You probably should look into directv satellite dsl.

I'm checking out dslreports.com and there's a few listed there. The only thing is that a lot of them want a 12 month agreement. I don't want to do that, because I don't know when I'm going to be able to get my own place and move out of here. So.....the hunt continues. *Sigh*

Oh, I checked AT&T and it's a no go.

To get discounted fees a lot of them will have you sign a 12 month contract. You might be able to get a month by month one if you pay for all your own stuff(installation, modem, etc).

I checked AT&T online so it's for sure as far as I know. I called Verizon again. My cousin had ordered it and it went through a while ago on the same number, so we couldn't figure out why it didn't work this time. She ordered it again, and I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

I think Comcast is the cable company here.

Hi sweetheart. Check into satallite service. If you are too far from the CO, then dial up is all you have besides what digital satellite can offer. Be warned, its somewhat expensive, but you can still have broadband if you can see the sky from your rooftop.

Contact Direct TV.

what do you mean? I was over the limit and they wouldn't sell me DSL. How does the guarantee work? What kinda speeds do you see? I ordered DSL from Verizon (then known as GayTE) on 3 different occasions; each time, they shipped me out a Fujitsu DSL modem self install kit, only to call me a day before the activation date to inform me that I wasn't eligible. Oh well, Adelphia cable has treated me well.

Yeah, you need to be no more than 2 miles from a telco central office for DSL to work. The fact that you're only getting 28.8 connects might also mean you don't have copper wire in your area----bad :( If that's the case, that wire would have to be replaced before the phone company would even THINK of selling DSL in that area.

IDSL has a range of 5 miles from the central office, but only goes 144K or so. Again, if you don't have any copper in your area, that might not be available either.

Check to see if there's any wireless providers in your area. Sat. connects still require a modem for uploading and tend to be a bit unreliable. A wireless provider should be able to give you at least 256K (maybe more).

Hope this helps.

Just thought I'd help out a little bit here. Sat is available in 2 way now and has been for a couple years now. Call another ISP in your area and ask them for DSL. I work for an ISP and here verizon is the telco that everyone must go through. One of my co-workers tried calling to get DSL at his home and they told him he was ineligible. I know there is nothing but about 6 blocks of copper between him and the CO so I advised he get in touch with our verizon wholesale rep and have them act on behalf of the isp instead of individually. They then told him sure they could give him dsl but it would take another week for some engineering work on the line. He now has dsl. So in short, maybe an ISP's request can be more persuasive if they said the limitation is distance and you know that you're close enough to the CO.

Also might want to look for some wireless ISP's....

Keep checking. I was told many times that I lived too far away from the central office. Then they told me that I was actually on the fringe and it was possible for me to get service. I have been very happy since getting my service. My speed is about 700k. (SBC)

Thanks, guys, for all your help. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for Verizon, but we'll see. I can't afford much more than it's going to cost me at Verizon, plus I don't have to get into a contract with them. :)

According to Comcast Cable Internet service is available in your zip code although I'm not sure if it's available to your home but this is encouraging news.

Click that link and submit the Priority Contact Form.
