Question about dog attack.

3 of my friends dogs (2 goldens and a rott/chow mix) attacked his other dog (mutt half their size) and I stepped in to help the mutt. I tried pulling them off by their collars and yelling at them, but that didn't work. Obviously they are too strong for me to throw around, and I could only grab 2 at a time. Finally I starting hitting and kicking them until they all let go and backed off. My question is, is that the right way to break up a dog fight? Could me hitting them have made them more aggressive and made it worse. I really didn't know what to do. Over 200lbs of dog vs a scrawny 35lb mutt I figured they would kill him if they wanted to. I am surprised that none of them tried to bite me the whole time. Anyone have any insight.

Well if you work out more you could maybe be able to throw them around like a real man.

1. stop yelling
2. get behind largest dog
3. pull dog back via hind legs to separate

obviously if you have more than 1 person each person grabs a dog.

I'd say don't grab the dog that is getting attacked. seems like it would draw their attention to you. I've broken up a dog fight before, but i was able to pick them up and toss them in different directions. I would also advise on being very careful, while when i broke up one, they did the same as your experience and completely ignored me until i threw them. I have my doubts that this will happen often.

If the dogs are on your property - Ruger 10/22 works pretty good.

If the dogs are off your property - pepper spray.

Do not grab a dog unless you want to get bit.

you're a human (I assume). your primary strengths over a dog are (probably) your brain and ability to use tools.

shoulda broken out a hose or something.

This. Unless you're big/strong enough to grab each dog by the collar to separate and not get bitten yourself, grabbing a dog by it's hind legs and pulling it away from the other dog is your best bet.

You're doing it wrong. Next time rub your crotch in the face of the most aggressive dog. Dogs take that as a sign of a true alpha and immediately back down and obey commands. If you do it right you should never have to use your hands.

Shooting a dog is the pussy way of breaking up a dog fight.

You aren't the man you think you are, lolz.

You never want to put yourself between two fighting dogs. Water is an excellent deterrent. If one's been attack trained though then there is sometimes no way to stop it, than killing the animal.

Kicking anything larger than a beagle is going to set you up to be fucked.

I dont care what it is, I keep a loaded 22 rifle just for cases like what the OP posted.

After attacking your dog, whats next? Your kids, grand kids, wife, maybe even you?

Dogs that act in an aggressive manner should be put down, period. I have no patience for dealing with animals that act aggressive towards anything. One day the dog attacks your dog, the next day it attacks your kids.

I always carry a little thing of pepper spray with me, almost exclusively to deal with rabid dogs

You can deal with a biting dog (i think!) by grabbing it's lower jaw and pulling down. Supposedly it freaks them out.

Usually a hose or really loud noise like a car horn or something similar works. Otherwise grab them by the back legs and pull them away. If they are just golden retrievers though knocking them around should do the trick.

My one time experience taught me to not go for the collar. First one i garbed and picked up slid right out of his and went back to the fight. after that i just garbed them by the back of the neck picked them up and tossed them.

Best way to break up a dog fight is to stick a finger in their butthole.

LOL this.

huh? half the reason I have a dog is how agressive he gets when spooked. I dont want him to welcome an intruder with a lick on the hand and showing him where I am sleeping
