*** added this part: after reading some reviews it does look like the 10k II would be the best choice of the 3 i listed below... my new question:
1. how much faster would the atlas 10k II be comparted to an ibm 60gxp?
2. would it only be faster on paper, or would it be noticable in every day usage (i do games/video editing/mpeg2 encoding)
***

im looking to get a new scsi hard drive, something thats either u2w or u160 and also 10,000 rpm

what drive would you scsi guys suggest? these are all used drives and all about the same price.....
some of the ones im looking at:
1. Quantum Atlas 10k 18.2 SCSI (18WLS)
2. IBM Ultrastar 18LZX
3. Quantum Atlas 10k II 18.2 (how much advantage is there with the 10k II over the plain atlas 10k?)

some guys are selling these drives used (each drive from a dif guy) but they are all about equally priced, they are all 10k rpm and they are also all u160

im figuring the atlas 10kII is going to be nicer then the older atlas 10k, but where does the ibm drive fall?

any help/suggestions is appreciated

*** edit *** i guess i should add that all the drives are 18gb *****

Atlas 10K II----- It is the only one there with an 8MD buffer/cache.

It is also a fairly quiet drive in comparison with the 10K.

Of the one's you listed the clear choice is the Quantum Atlas 10k II, which is still a very decent drive.

Modern 7200RPM IDE drives match up extremely well against the classic IBM 18LZX and 10K Atlas drives. The IBM and original Atlas 10K you listed are long since out of date and not very good purchases anymore.

There is no real debating the matter IMHO, the Quantum Atlas 10k II is quite a bit faster then either of the other two alternatives you mentioned.

their seek & access time specs don't match up well.

this might help.

the 10K III is the way to go right now.

i heard rumors that ibm's new 73LZX wil be hitting shelves sometime this month .. if yiou can wait.

No question, 10K II is fastest among those 3. It will be quite a bit faster than a 60GXP in applications that make decent use of the disc or access a lot of smaller files. It won't be much faster in games, it won't be faster at all in mpeg2 encoding, and to be quite honest it won't be all that much faster in video editing either where STR is most important and the 10KII is a bit older and right in line with the 60GXP in that respect. A 10KIII would be quite a bit faster in video editing.
