If you are doing a program such as starting strength which is 3x5 for all but deadlift, how and when would you attempt a 1 rep max. Would you save it for after the 3x5 or do it before the 3x5 or is it advised to not do it at all?

Might do it after 12 weeks but really I don't care about 1RMs. I couldn't tell you what any of mine are right now. I could come close by using some of the prediction tools online where you input what you can do max for 5 or 6, etc.

If you are to do it, I'd do it stand alone with out doing any working sets before hand, just the usual warm ups.

If you are new to training I wouldn't max out for at least 6months of training. Maybe max out after 3months if you have a knowledgeable training friend to watch over you.

If you attempt a 1RM you probably wouldn't have a real training day in the sense that you may struggle to do your usual 3x5 after maxing out. I would probably go lighter on your 3x5 as you have maxed out. Save your normal training for another day.

A 1 rep max is only done to see where your REAL PEAK strength is at.

You can not truly perform a 1 rep max after a full range workout as your muscles will be too tired and will not be at their true max potential.

Agree with the others--I haven't done any 1RMs in quite a while, but when I did/do, it basically turns into it's own day. I'd do a few warm-up sets first, go for the 1RM, and then (as Koing said) do a lighter routine of 3x5 afterward.
