A tiny subfraction of pathologists do their own research and would rightly be described as scientists. That does not make pathologists in general scientists, and to suggest otherwise shows a banal ignorance of what science is and of how science is done.

doctors not being scientists is their primary failing when it comes to emergent problems that haven't been seen before. the threat of Ebola in the western world is new. Doctors are memory bots. They excel at memorization and identification of problems in individuals and at applying diagnostic methodology that they have been taught in order to figure out what's wrong with a patient. When it comes to basic science they are usually completely rubbish. Memory bot (doctor) vs. original thought (scientist).

You guys are arguing that we should allow Ebola to travel freely until it is established here, then quarantine each little outbreak as a source. That's just nuts. And unlike most military members, doctors and nurses are competent to self-isolate and self-triage. There is a level of concern regarding the honesty of people trying to get on a plane; but even when SARS went nuts all over Asia and left some 11k? people dead, mandatory screening of everyone entering and exiting airports throughout China identified some 11k out of 1.2 million people with fever, some 200 of those problematic, and none of them with SARS...and SARS is far, far more infectious and potentially devastating than ebola.

Why are we quarantining military individuals that, considering all known evidence, have essentially a 0% chance of exposure? It makes no sense.

What you fail to say is that other people made his work possible by funding through foundations. He didn't go broke. Now if Salk was around today trying to make something like, oh, zmapp he could not have done it. A polio vaccine was novel at the time and certainly of immense importance, but it was done when research cost peanuts, with equipment that amounted to bear skins and stone knives in comparison to today. You want that kind of research again? Here's what you do. Call your Congresscritter and demand that a 10% income tax be put in place for pure and applied science. Start with 1% and have it increase by that for ten years to give the economy time to adjust. Salk gave it all away. Certainly you'll give 10%, right?

Glad we agree on non-essential travel. The military individuals are being quarantined because they were exposed to blood samples and contaminated premises. Either they were handling infected blood and perhaps patients, or they were building in a heavily contaminated environment. I don't know why it's being done in Italy; we have tons of domestic military bases with plenty of capacity where troops could carry out normal training and still be properly monitored, and they could also visit with their families. Hopefully the quarantine time is considered part of their deployment and not just tacked onto it.

I'm all for health care professionals self-quarantining; they just have to actually do it. I'm also all for the taxpayers paying for this as a public health issue. As for SARS, I don't know that a travel ban or even screening would do much for SARS. Perhaps the Mexico travel ban seen in one of the last few outbreaks, if it had been adopted early and uniformly. But SARS is much more easily transmitted and much less lethal. Far different risk vs reward model.

Although if we get those miracle drugs into production and banked - assuming they are storable - then Ebola may well become no worse than SARS. So far every infected American patient caught reasonably early has survived.
