Ah man, I can laught about it now. So my sis-in-law brings me her computer that's having hard drive problems. I turn it on, it runs ok, after a whiel it does begin making funny hard drive noises and crashes (Win98). Anyways, it sounds bad enought that I pull out an old HD I have laying around and get ready to swap them. But for whatever reason, I powered the system up one more time with the old HD. That's when it made more funny hard drive noises and I see a flame coming out of the hard drive! :Q Swear to God!!! I panicked a bit but then the flame went out and I had to laugh a bit. Then I had to laugh some more when I inspected the hard drive (saw a burnt out chip) and discovered it was a Quantum Fireball!! 😛

Well, I thought it was worth sharing on ATOT. True story. Anyone experience such a thing before? Just FYI, it's a Celeron 400 Gateway mini-tower. And, I was wondering if I should tell Gateway about this too. BTW, who took over Quantum? Was it Maxtor?
 
I used to work for a hospital that leased Gateway computers with Quantum Fireball harddrives. They had a habit of blowing up too.
 
at work a couple of years ago we had a bunch of quantums burn up in the same month. i think they were around the 6-8gb mark. i'm almost willing to bet yours is the same model. it was one of the chips on the bottom that just burned up...

Hahaha, my sister has a 4GB Quantum in her computer that is still working fine. It's a Quantum Bigfoot though.......

edit: the damn thing takes up a whole 5.25 slot!
 
I had a 13GB Quantum Fireball KX for years. One of the first 7200rpm/ATA66 drives. It still works fine (now in my bro's rig) after 4-5 years. Only complaint I ever had about it is that it seeked LOUD. Defragging or booting-up (when it was my system drive) could be heard from 2 rooms away 😛

A woman I used to work with had the same thing happen to her system. Same type as that one. A chip on the controller board blew out. To say the least Quantum's drives are craptacular. Never seen so many drives of any brand fail that way.

 
I believe this was a problem with Quantum's. I had an incident with one that ended up burning my finger (only a small blister), and the customer had the nerve to say I caused it. IIRC he brought the computer in because he couldn't get to Windows. Pansy company ends up replacing the HD for him.

well. Currently drives are going for .50ish cents a gig. so.. your talking like.. $3-$4?

Oh, yeah. I was thinking an equivalent or better machine from Gateway 😉
