According to the rebate, requests must be postmarked by 10/30/00, for hard drives bought between 5/15/00 and 9/30/00.

Just didn't want anyone getting the shaft!

I just got this drive today ,,, and this big momma is NOISY as hell :(

I think it is a little faster than my Maxtor diamondmax plus ... but the noise difference is definetely noticable ..

Is this normal ? Should I RMA the drive ? Are people getting as loud a HD as I do ?

I just got the drive put it in, Nice and fast.. as for noise.... It is about the same as the seagate's I had in..... not to loud, not to quiet.... just enough so you know something is running.

err: Its difficult to know whether the sound you're hearing is "normal," since the definition of "noisy" is kind of subjective.

My advice: Run DiskDoctor/Scandisk on the drive and thoroughly scan the surface. If there are no errors, assume that your drive works fine but is going to be that noisy for as long as you own it. If that's too noisy for you, return it. If not, I think you should keep it.

I am using this disk now. And yes, I can hear the noise, even it's quiet while formatting. I just ran wintune for simple test. The uncached speed is very fast.

Seems lots of people complain the noise of this HD. Just wondering, is there anyone using a computer with no fan at all?

I only have ATX PS fan, CPU fan, Video Card fan, case fan, plus the sound from CDROM.

Hi,

I don't think there are any errors on the HD .. but that it sounded like first generation HD with lots of noise, especially when it is spinning.

I have 5 case fan on my full tower, added with video card fan, Globalwin CPU Fan & 2 CD-ROMs. Add that with another 3 computers running in the same room with an average of 3 case fans on each of them.

I certainly notice the HD noise ... I used to have the exact same configuration, but with Maxtor Diamondmax 20GB HD which is so quiet.

I guess I have to bear with this noise now. My gut feeling is telling me that this HD is running a little faster than my Maxtor Drive. Probably I should benchmark the two and see.

WhiteMouse, your speed degradation can be caused if you jumper the drives incorrectly. If your old drive was the only hard drive on its controller, it was probably jumpered for a special single drive setting.

If you now have both drives on the Promise controller, one will have to be jumpered for master, the other for slave. This is a simple solution, but it is hard to realize that master/slave is the problem when all you get is a degradation in performance. It really shouldn't have worked at all.

I saw an earlier post somewhere, someone said that you can line your case with special sound proofing material that is meant to be used in cars. I think you can get it at a car audio shop. I forget the name of it. Does anyone know anything about this?

You can use the accoustic packing the drives were so well packed in from Quantum. (I recieved my original Quantum boxes INSIDE the buy,com peanut packed box.) Just put ssome of that in your case as lining.
As I said...with my PeP66 and the Black Label fan as well as my 120mm Exhaust fan and the other fans cooling my system with my Raided Quantums I can't hear anything.
(Although sometimes I can hear my phone ringing...) ;)

I sent in my rebate form 10 days ago and haven't received the confirmation postcard everybody's been talking about getting. Should I get worried?

I called them about the buy out and they said everythign is fine and we should still get the rebate.. I must say I really like this drive!! winME boots so much faster now. Used to have some older Maxtor 10gig.. imagion that I had and Maxtor and now I do again(sort of)

As for noise.. what the hech are you people talking about. It's no more louder than my old drive or any drive I've ever used! It has a low pitch grunt when it reads that sounds much better than most.

This drive kicks ass and for the price..... what can I say, it rox!

Mine started off noisy but during video renders only, after that it's pretty quiet and it's actually gotten a little quieter.

For those wondering about the rebate I bought two of these drives before for $114 each includig coupons and receipt (still a good deal) and it took Quantum about a month to send me a notification. The notification said I still have about 6-8 weeks to receive my cash. So, I'm thinking this will be a 9-10 week ordeal from the time you send your rebate to Quantum. This is to give you an idea as to what to expect in time delivery.
