I just received rebate from Quantum and they've been totally on top of it--fast, informative (sent me a postcard saying thanks your rebate will be processed soon). That's refreshing since so many companies take forever--or never--to send rebates. Quantum gets my vote all else being equal.
 
Monty: honestly, i'm only making an assumption (sorry people)

but i would assume it would be far slower than from a store

I just spoke with Virginia @ buy.com customer service:
#1) I was impressed with the customer service...very professional, fast, attentive and friendly.
#2) I was told that a different Email and CC can make you a new customer.
...I ordered my 2nd Quantum drive for my RAID no problem.

Yes, there's a HUGE difference between 7200rpm and 5400rpm drives, at least what I've noticed. Especially after I upgraded the CPU, the cpu was no longer the bottleneck in processing, it was the harddrives. As soon as I put in a 7200rpm drive to replace my 5400rpm, load times became MUCH faster. I'm now looking for a 10,000rpm drive because of this, since I know the CPU is fast enough, and its time to bring the rest of the system up to speed.

Kwad Guy, I also have the Quantum HD's and they are loud as heck. My roomate compares it to popcorn popping in it's early stages. I thought it was defective at first but I think you've helped confirm that they are loud. I was thinking about returning them and getting the IBM GXPs.
 
I have a hard time imagining the degree of loudness everyone seems to be talking about. I have the Fireball 30GB, still sitting on the shelf waiting to be installed, and I've never heard a hard drive being so loud you have to turn your speakers up (as someone mentioned they had to do). I've noticed my Seagate Medalist has a foam rubber-like cover, which the Quantum conspicuously lacks. I'm wondering if it's really bad, if getting one of these insulating covers would help?
 
Nice deal. What do I use for a receipt? Do I just make a copy of the order confirmation page and send that? Last time I ordered through them the packing slip didn't have a price on it. Will that work?
 
Hey Itiz, how's the noise on the hard drive, is it that bad? Can anyone give me the numbers on the WD 45 gig that broadwayblue mentioned? I want to know if its faster than a smaller 7200 HD, like something in the range of 20gig maxtors, ibms, or wd. thanks
 
Worked professionally in computers for almost 10 years.

Never really liked quantum...loud and slow...realiability not great.

Far as what's best....for the money, get 7200RPM Maxtor's w/2mb cache.....excellent value. Quiet and NOT hot.

If ya got the bucks...IBM Deskstar GXP's are nice units.

I agree, I did this deal and have alredy returned the Quantum... one of the LOUDEST drives I've ever owned... glad I went with the WD 45 gig caviar...

"Loud and slow" isn't how any of the reviewers describe Quantum drives. If you read storagereview.com, you'll see that the Quantum competes directly with the IBM Deskstar over which is the best 30 gigger out there. The Quantum beats the Maxtor and Western Digital drives in just about every test.

I have the drive, and for everyone worrying about it keeping you up at night: It won't! It's incredibly fast, and is also the cheapest 7200 rpm 30 gigger out there. Add on the fact that it's also the highest rated with the IBM deskstar, and you've got a great deal.
 
Got mine a few days ago from buy.com. It's quiet and fast, although may not be as quiet as IBM. Definitely worth it!
