Log back into buy.com, view your past orders, view receipt/invoice, and print it. Worked fine for me.

hkssupra69,
I have to agree with Monty...Quantum makes good drives, although not as quiet as Seagate, I don't even notice as my ATX Case has EIGHT fans including my PeP66 and a 120mm exhaust fan.
Since my computers generally sound like the runway at LAX anyway I can't even notice the HD noise. (Although my old Quantum 3gig Fireball was LOUD, and one day alerted me to a hacker rifling thru my 'puter.)
I was a pure Seagate fan because of their EXTREME silence, but I had a 13gig one get wierd on me and crash a few times after having had Linux on it. My old Quantum never gave me a problem.
As regards Western Digital: I wouldn't buy one, as I hear they will be going out of business soon as the HD business has been too competitive for them.:frown:

The best ATA/66 controller is from the people who invented it -- Promise Technologies. You can get the UltraATA/66 from Onvia for about $20 shipped, INCLUDING the cable you need to achieve high speed. Not only is it just about the cheapest ATA/66 card out there now, it's the best.

My computer had no problem detecting everything automatically. Installation was a breeze. (Though I wish they'd at least give you the damn mounting screws. Cheap bastards.)

Note that there are drivers for the Promise card in Win2000 and
WinME. If you want to use the Promise card with W98, NT4, Linux,
etc. you need to install your OS, install the drivers for the card
and THEN hang your drive off the card. This may not be an issue
if your MB supports the hard drive, but it's gonna bite you if
you're using the Promise card because you have an older board
with a BIOS that doesn't support a drive as large as the one you
want to use (e.g. the 32Mb limit of some older BIOSes).

Also, supposedly there are "issues" if you take a drive that
has been partitioned/etc. on a standard IDE controller and then
put it on the Promise. Don't know exactly what those issues
are, but they're aluded to on the Promise site. They say that if you
want to use the card, you should ALWAYS use the card for the
drive you're gonna use on it...

Kwad: While you're right on those things, I don't want to scare people away. The Promise is absolutely the MOST compatible card out there. Buying any other ATA/66 or 100 card is going to give you the same headaches.

My 1.5 year-old gateway recognized the card just fine. I had the drive installed and formatted in about 15 mins.

Guys and Gals,

Just had the drive delivered. The rebate form states you need to attach a copy of the receipt. The only thing that came with the drive was the packing slip.

Will this be good enough. Advice on this appreciated.

oops! forgot to read all threads.

Regarding the receipt, just go to your buy.com account, open the order history (or something of that sort) and print it out, the price/product/ANI (ANI=all necessary info) will be included. Also, next time you finished placing your order, just print that page out where it has your order number, the product you purchased and the amount you paid for it.

About the Promise card, the Windows 2000 driver on their site seems only for Ultra100. Also, my old HD becomes very slow after I installed Promise Card and this 30G HD. I did not partition or format that old HD, just connected it to the card also, and now it's back to MB IDE, for multi-boot reason.

WhiteMouse: Assuming your old HD isn't ATA/66, why not just run it off your motherboard as usual?

Well, my (one year) old WD HD is ATA66, and it is connected to Motherboard now, while it was connected to the promise card for a while.

Now I connect it back to MB, is it possible that a cable can make the HD slow?

Just got my Quantum rebate notification in the mail, it took bout 3 weeks to get in and it says it will take another 6-8 weeks to deliver the rebate.

The Quantum's rock in my RAID setup, allowing UNCOMPRESSED video editing. Read times are 51mb/sec and writes are at 38mb/sec off the Fasttrak66 controller.

My Quantums are just as fast as my Seagate (7200rpm) Barracudas.
But I must moan about HDs in general, as regards fdisk. I don't like to use the proprietary software that comes with Hard Drives, preferring instead to use the fdisk which I always felt Windows accepted better. Am I wrong? The down size is loss of almost 10% of the drive, ie when I fdisked my 2x30 Gig Quantums into 1 big virtual Raided Drive, it said I only had 56 Gigs available.
I dont mind giving up some space to the partition and housekeeping type info, but 4 Gigs seems excessive. Any thoughts on this?:(
