And at 4.5 GHz, 8G4 could reach 3400 points in Geekbench 6, a hair behind the A18 Pro's 3500 points (as per rumours).

So in Geekbench 5 where A18 doesn't have the advantage of SME, 8G4 might actually be FASTER THAN IT.

But at what cost?

It will not be faster than the A18 Pro. Moreover, it will be slightly behind the A17 Pro in ST performance. Oryon has a worse IPC than the A17 P-core. A17 Pro in GB 5 scores 2100+. M4 - 2700+. A18 Pro will have approximately 2400-2500 points. X Elite scores 1900 points in GB5 in ST.

If they wanted to, I imagine Apple could introduce a $499 Macbook SE using an M2 without losing money. But they have a margin target that's a lot higher than PC OEMs, so there will surely be ARM Windows laptops cheaper than Macs.

But they aren't competing against Macs, they're competing against x86 Windows laptops. There's no way Qualcomm is going to sacrifice THEIR margins to compete with x86 laptops in the lower price bands.

Well, US prices don't include tax since it varies by locality. But yes MacBook Air M1/8GB/256GB is $650. So Qualcomm needs to put their best foot forward because Apple is killing it when it comes to value performance.

They don't care about flops but the performance. Some kid is going to play Minecraft on his new QualcommBook Air (3000 RPM edition) and his cousin's 4 year old MacBook Air will be doing better and the impression they'll get is "wow, Windows sucks".

When the moment comes it's pretty likely that Apple release it, even capped would trash the x86 laptops of that price, forcing Intel and AMD to be more agressive.

Apple doesn't really see the PC market as competition, so why should they bother? Like I've said many times, buyers make the "Mac vs PC" decision FIRST, then decide what to buy. There just aren't a lot of people who are open to either one who are in the "I would get a Mac if they were cheaper" camp. Its a lot easier to switch between iPhone and Android and while there is movement there aren't that many people who will switch between them multiple times. Most of the switchers are doing so for a reason, and are unlikely to ever switch back.

Apple offering cheaper iPhones makes sense in a way that offering cheaper Macs doesn't. Apple wants to expand the installed base of iPhones, because they get post sale revenue via the App Store. They don't benefit in the same way from having a larger installed base of Macs. Sure, they want more Mac owners, but they aren't willing to sacrifice margins to get them.

Apple wants to take the high end of the PC market, where the profit is. They don't care about the lower end, there's no money there and all having a cheap Mac would do is steal sales from the current "low end", Macbook Air.
 
Another lovely nugget of information from the CnC article:

A larger GPU needs a larger power budget to shine, and Asus’s laptop is able to give it exactly that. Battery discharge rate as measured through HWInfo was around 50W. It’s quite a bit higher than the battery discharge rate on the Meteor Lake, Phoenix, and Snapdragon X Elite laptops tested. But it’s worth it, because AMD does get more FPS per watt than the Snapdragon X Elite.

That is surely sad. So while they may have gained a few points with the CPU uarch, they can't compete with the established player in this space (and no, Apple Mx SoCs don't count coz they can't run as many games flawlessly as x86 laptops).

Well, I guess this was to be expected.

Think about it. How much time Qualcomm have had to work on X Elite? Three years at best? All while onboarding a new team, converting a (most certainly unfinished) CPU core intended for servers to laptops, plus getting it stitched together on their SoC.

I'm actually surprised at how good Adreno is, considering it is a glorified mobile GPU whose drivers were probably written by two guys in their lunch times.
