I got Quake today. I started playing it. The graphics aren't totally immersive, but it is an excellent game. Once I got passed that idea that you can't look up or down, I had to stop myself from playing further so that I could fully enoy it better in the nighttime. Fun! I understand the word Frag now. :)

Quake II. I need to roll back to a different DX just to install. That is gonna be fun. Any idea about this.

You don't need to roll back DirectX. Put the CD in, right click the drive's icon and click open, run setup.exe. Make sure do get the 3.14 patch too.

I remember Quake 1, it was Easter about 5 years ago, and I first played it, my friend and I liked it a lot, those pesky shamblers are kinda hard tho lol, look for the nail gun ammo, see how it says NIN? I guess the guns in the Quake world use "Nine Inch Nails" ;)

Guys I was so good at that game I could have written a book on it. Played multiplayer for many years with and without grapple hook. I prefered without it though since I was old school but did enjoy it immensly. I would regularly beat hell difficulty (single player just for fun) without dying once including all the secret levels. How? I knew where everything was and how the monsters would react before hand. IMO Quake I was the best multiplayer game ever made.

Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails did the soundtracks for Quake and Quake II IIRC.

Both are great games and I've finished them many times.

But this topic probably should be in the Software forum.

If I am not mistaken to look up and down in Quake you have to press the ` key then type in "+mlook" without the quotations then hit enter. That should give you mouselook.

To really have a good experience you need the GLQuake patch. Makes the graphics MUCH better and has mouselook built in.

Ahh Quake 1 and 2, on Voodoo 1 and 2. The good old days.

Why is it that I've never NOT played a Carmack game through to the end, and it's very seldom I play more than a few levels of most other games?

Can't wait for Doom3, really could care less about the rest.

Yup, or open up the config.ini and enter a line for "+mlook". I installed and played it again a few weeks ago on a old Pentium 200MMX box I had with a Voodoo1 and brought back memories...

Nobody even metioned Quake 3 (sniff sniff). I was a late bloomer into computerland just 3 short years ago. Quake 3 was the first , first person shooter game (heck it was the first game!!!) I ever played. It started a video game trend in my house that my wife still deplores to this day (she wanted me to get a hobby....). Now a have a huge arsenel of games from role playing to sim to first person shooter. I still run the quake 3 benchmark as a quickcheck for framerate. I still play the game today. I am also dissapointed that Quake 4 ( to my limited knowledge) never transpired. I remember reading about it and I even dowloaded a couple of bots that were due to apperar in Quake 4. If any body has some good info on what happened to Quake 4...I would like to hear it

He did the soundtrack for the first Quake only. The Quake II soundtrack was done by Sonic Mayhem.

I haven't messed with Q2 for awhile. Great MP game...so-so SP game. To get it to look good, run it in 32 bit color by adding
-32bpp
to the shorcut that launches it.

Also, in your baseq2 folder, make a notepad file and put in it:

set cl_particles "1"
set gl_dynamic "0"
set gl_polyblend "0"
set gl_playermip "0"
set gl_flashblend "0"
set gl_ext_swapinterval "1"
set gl_swapinterval "1"
set gl_ztrick "1"
set cd_nocd "1"
set in_mouse "1"
set m_filter "1"
set gl_ext_palettedtexture "0"
set gl_picmip "0"
set gl_bitdepth "0"
set gl_round_down "0"
set gl_modulate "2.8"
//gl_modulate controls brightness of shadowed areas. Higher is brighter. default is 1 (play with this one)
set intensity "2.0"
set vid_gamma "0.800000"
//intensity is overall brightness (play with this one)
set gl_triplebuffer "1"
set gl_texturemode GL_LINEAR_MIPMAP_LINEAR
//This tuns on trilinear filtering

Save the file as autoexec.cfg. You may have to tweak the gamma, modulate and intensity for your setup.

I'll try GLQuake patch - see if I can find it.

Quake III is a multiplayer game only. Unlike many people, I really couldn't care less about the multiplayer aspect of a game. I buy it for the single player experience.

@ XRAYSPEX

Quake 4 is being developed by Raven software (SOF series) with the help of iD...to arrive late '04/early '05 probably. Based again on the human - strogg war (I'd personally love to see the Quake 1 theme again though).

What are you talking about!!! I have 3cds full of death matches all for single player enjoyment. I have never played Quake3 "online" although you can I don't. There is just me,a selection of bots of my choice, the map I want to play and away I go. I have played Quake 3 in single player for hours on end. You should really give it another try. There is a selection you are obviously missing, or you you have been greatly misinformed if you think you can't get single player mode out of Quake 3!

Let me specify a bit more...

Story-driven single-player games is what I want.

I hate bots.

I do have UT2004 though as a bridge from single-player to single-player.

Very sorry...I totally misunderstood you then vian. ...and hope your better at UT2K4 it than I am right now. Just played it for the first time last night. The graphics are very nice. After a lot of first person shooter though I thought it would not be all that hard....WOW...did I underestimate that. It appears to be much different form previous versions of Unreal Tournament.... (isn't there an "easy mode", I couldn't find it and I looked real hard), at least that's my limited impression so far. Seems I spend a lot of time doing virtual faceplants and every time I get up I get fragged from somewhere I don't even see where yet . I'm wondering because of your strong desire for storyline if you 've ever considered the "Halflife" games.
