imagine a gothic/future game like quake 1 with the doom 3 engine. * drool * quake 1 was the first 3d FPS, and boy did they know how to use it. the 3rd and 4th episodes were scary as hell. :|

Very sorry...I totally misunderstood you then vian. ...and hope your better at UT2K4 it than I am right now. Just played it for the first time last night. The graphics are very nice. After a lot of first person shooter though I thought it would not be all that hard....WOW...did I underestimate that. It appears to be much different form previous versions of Unreal Tournament.... (isn't there an "easy mode", I couldn't find it and I looked real hard), at least that's my limited impression so far. Seems I spend a lot of time doing virtual faceplants and every time I get up I get fragged from somewhere I don't even see where yet . I'm wondering because of your strong desire for storyline if you 've ever considered the "Halflife" games.
There is, I think, 9 difficulty options. Go to single player and then to create new and then you get to choose your difficulty.

I have played Half-life, Opposing Forces and Blueshift. I have also played Counter-Strike and Day of Defeat.

GLQuake doesn't work. It just says ERROR at a really low resolution, when I try to run it. I've been running it in WinQuake, is that any "similar." Didn't look as bad as I expected.

Just installed Quake II by exploring the CD and opening setup. Thanks MDE.

Has anyone read the manual to Quake? Wow, that is some technical writing. That book was amazing, best by 10fold any other manual I've ever read.

For some weird reason, the setup engine experiences an error when lauching either Quake II expansions.

For the expansions, either try running the setup in Windows 95 compatability mode or poke around the CD for a text file that explains how to manually install them.

To get it to look good, run it in 32 bit color by adding -32bpp
Quake II (and most other games that don't control the bit depth themselves) will automatically run at whatever bit depth your desktop runs at.

Also I don't see the need for your file extra file at all.

Depending on driver settings, you may or may not run @ 32 bit. That setting just ensures that it does. It doesn't hurt to use it. The autoexec file adds several visual tweaks such as tri-linear filtering that are not available in game settings.

Well a lot of your settings in that file are bad, like Z trick which can produce seams on lines. Plus you've enabled the likes of vsync and triple buffering which really should be controlled through the drivers if you want them. Additionally a whole bunch of lines do nothing at all since they appear to disabling their respective functions.

As for trilinear, it's available in the standard config just by changing the gl_texturemode line.

Its an old autoexec file. I dont play Q2 anymore and didn't spend a whole lot of time looking at every setting to see if they all still apply. There are several settings that do and are not available the normal menu options. I fired Q2 up and it works fine on my 9800P with those settings. I doubt ztrick is needed any longer like with older cards. Using autoexec prevents settings from inadvertently getting reset as they can when used in the standard config file.

Most people who install Q2 dont know about these tweaks and just use standard config. This will make a nice difference.

Maybe you should post a max IQ file for Q2 of your own???

Try running it in compatibility mode for win 95. I got it to work in xp before, but you may have to play with settings to get it to work right. It also allows for higher resolutions. Winquake is not the same. Quake was designed to run in DOS, winquake obviously runs it in windows. Maybe try uninstalling winquake and just install the glquake patch.

Looks pretty much like mine. Add in
set gl_texturemode GL_LINEAR_MIPMAP_LINEAR
to get the tri-linear filtering.

Wow A Quake 1 thread... soooo cool...

OK, lets clarify a couple of things....

1. you can look up and down... and also get a targeting reticle... all from Console... hit the ~ key to go to console and type "+mlook" to get mouse look... I think to get the target it was "target1" or something like that... look it up or hit Quakeworld.

2. To get 3D accelerated Doom on a non Open GL card (most cards out today) you need to install the Open GL patch, the D3D patch... the D3D patch is a little more hard to find, but it's out there... I'm pretty sure you can still find it on File planet.

Quake 1 totally blows Q2 out of the water when it comes to mood and setting and level design. Q2 looked really nice at the time. Running around a factory and a warehouse for hours isn't really level design in my books.

OK, I got this different copy of quake in the mail. I ordered a package on ebay that contained quake and it's mission packs - it was the only option to get the mission packs. This quake is touted as the Full Registered Version. The CD-ROM even looks different. I think this is the original game Cd. And the one prior to this one was a new modified CD with all the updates applied. I was able to get GLQuake to work on this one. It looks nice. It looks nice. Much nicer than WinQuake.

I'm having a bit of a problem though, installing the Expansions. Any ideas here?

I pretty much use the standard config file with a few extras such as trilinear added in.

I have both mission packs: Scourge of Armagon and Dissolution of Eternity.

Dammit... the missionpacks aren't NT compatible.

Ah... finally got it to run on the GLQuake engine.

This thread has piqued my interest in Q1 again.... wow, what a fun game!

I'm having some issues with video settings though. I'm running in 1024x768 resolution (on an LCD) and can't get the HUD to display during gameplay. Using "viewsize 100" and have a black box at the bottom of the screen where the HUD should be. When I bring up the console the HUD appears. Any ideas? I may try a lower resolution... :disgust:

Also, does anyone know how to extract the music files from the CD?

Edit: running GLQuake BTW.

But you can. Open the console and type +mlook if memory serves...

At any rate, this thread should be moved to the s/w, programming & games section.

Kind of weird seeing an outbreak of Quake1 threads around here.

You guys really should get fuhquake and tenebrae though. It would save you a lot of trouble trying to get winquake / glquake / all that crap running when you can just install 1 mod and get far better graphics and less problems.

I like to play in it's originality. Not some mod.

LOL. I didn't think there was a HUD.

One thing that really gets to me is that when you strafe it's like you are running. It's way too sensitive. I don't think I can play the game like that. The guy runs too quickly.

nice link

I'm on the second episode right now, maybe on the 2nd or 3rd level in it. It is a freaky game. I had to turn my brightness up to see a bit better, but now it's all good. Awsome. I had the chills.

I've beaten Quake, Doom, Ultimate Doom and Doom II more times than I count. Enough that it got boring at the highest difficulties.
Awesome games, though, and with all our eye (and ear) candy, we still can't top Quake2 and Tribes for gameplay.
