My local amazon, www.amazon.co.uk, lists the release date as December 31, 2004 and already has the game on pre-order - but i think that release date is HIGHLY unlikely - have heard next to NOTHING about this game

>>> indeed, just ran a google on Q4, and it turned up only a few tid bits here and there, but most noticably, NO official site

I haven't come across any screeners, pics or anything apart from a few lone artistic impressions.

So... has anyone heard anything? :p

With D3 hitting the shelves in August, there's no way in the world id would have Q4 finished by the end of the year. Based on their track record with time between game releases you're looking at least 2005, possibly 2006.

Any word if Q4 will use the D3 engine? If that's the case, then hopefully the release will be sooner than later.

Raven is developing the game though, not id. I doubt it will be out this year, but I wouldn't think the development of doom 3 will affect its release date that much.

Yes it will.

"The next game in the popular Quake series will use id Software's Doom III technology."

As said above, Raven is developing the game, under the eye of id, so it could be here a lot sooner than 2006, definately 2005 I'd say.

Yup, CubicZirconia has it right, Raven has been developing the game for the last 2 years (about). Those release dates made by Amazon are if-y at best. We wont see the game (IMHO) until q2/q3 2005.

It will be pushed back from the date you stated above. Expect it.

I am guessing theyll have to tone down the dynamic lighting and interactable objects or change the netcode q4 will need to be at least 16 players to be a serious contender IMO and D3 is limited to 4 - although IMO d3 4 player deathmatch with darkness and interactable objects (hopefully almost a hide n seek atmosphere) will be a welcome change from 124 player fragfests that are common instead of innovative now.

D3 is not "limited" to four player DM. Its not hard coded into the game. That can change. This is just id's way of providing a small portion of DM for a single player game. id's properties is diving into a SP experience (doom) and a mutiplayer (Quake). You will no longer see (this is my guess) a game that will have a absolute amazing SP and MP expereince from them.

No, it's not hard limited to 4 players but the system and bandwidth requirements make 4-8 players the most any machine will be able to handle well.

Read in a interview Q4 was gonna use D3 engine just modified a little more/different. I'd bet sumer/fall 2005 for Q4.

Q4 will use the D3 enginge. I would guess mid 2005 at the best.

as for DNF.. man that game has been delayed for what? 6-7 years now? It will never make it to the shelves. unless.. the unnanounced game that will utilize the Unreal 3 enginge is...DNF? Crazy thought eh? ;)

There's something intrinsically smooth about Q3A that i've never felt in another game before. None of the UTs have it, and CS isn't even close. Maybe it's the Q3 physics or something. The way the character moves, the way he jumps. It's really smooth. Almost synthetic. Hoping that Q4 will be everything i think it will be. I'm hoping raven doesn't jack up the game. Wasn't D3 developed by activision? Or are they some sort of middleman? I can't believe ID would leave Q4 up to another company. Didn't they learn from T3 and the lack of James Cameron? Or Predator 2 and the lack of arnold?

First of all, I thought T3 was great....even without Cameron.

Second, Raven is one of the premier developers who have used id technology over the years. They have come out with a bunch of great games including SOF, SOF2, Jedi Knight, Hexen (I believe) and others. I think they will put together quite a nice game with Quake 4. Time will tell, but if anyone is capable...Raven is.

Also, Activision is just the publisher of D3, id did all of the development on the game.

I personally believe that this smooth movement is actually due to the fast-paced, strafe-jumping movements in the game.

Activision is the publisher. They market and distribute the game. Id is the studio that actually makes the game.

I think Q4 will turn out well with Raven. Return to Castlewolfenstein was done by another studio, under id's supervision, and that game turned out well. Honestly, all they'd have to do in Q4 is keep the gameplay, update the graphics, make new maps, and people would be satisfied.

I was all psyched about Quake4 until I heard a rumor that it will be based off of Quake2. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO THE WORST OF THE QUAKES. I guess the rumor is based on the fact that only 1 picture from Quake4 has ever been released and it is a shot of one of the old enemies in Quake2 redone.

I was so hoping they would bring back Quake1...

I have to say Quake 2 was my favorite Quake so far. As far as I know, Quake 3 destroyed the Quake 2 community (probably with the help of Counter-Strike), but it was never able to replace it. Quake 3 never had a good replacement for Quake 2 CTF, my favorite mod of all time.

I know of another forum that George B posts in sometimes and alot of people give him a hard time (as they should). Anyways, the only bits of info we've been able to pull from it (its not much):

- Duke now looks NOTHING like the 2001 trailer that was released a few years back.

- Things are progressing well.

- George made some remarks about physics and AI when Far Cry came out, and I dont remember exactly what he said but it was something to the effect of "Yes, its a great looking game with cool physics, but we've had that for a while now".

- George also said he will not start leaking/showing any new info on the game until 6 months before release. So, since its 7/15 and we havent heard anything, I'm guessing we wont see DNF this year. ;)

On a side note, I would just like to say that I fully beleive that DNF is not vaporware. I know it sounds crazy, but I think when it finally does come out next year that its going to rock. I'm just going on a hunch. I have nothing to back that up.

This was pulled from this thread. (its my quote)

The problem with developing a game is that you can always add more features. And if you keep adding features you will never finish. Somewhere along the line (preferrably at the beginning), you just have to define the feature-set, and finish the game when you meet those goals.

If DNF had come out 3 years ago, we might be waiting for duke nukem 5 by now. And the way things are right now, no matter how good DNF is, it will be a disappointment because it has been in development for so long.

Isn't Q4 going to be multiplayer only? If that's the case what do the models really matter anyway? You can always change them.

Correct me if I'm wrong on the MP aspect though.

Quake 4 is supposed to be an immersive single player experience along with a good MP one.

I for one cant wait to see how raven will make use of the Doom 3 technology.
