Q9550 OC, is it ok to keep at this speed?

I have an E0 Q9550 on a Gigabyte GA-EP45-UD3R with a Xigmatek HDT-S1283 cooler and 4GB of G.Skill PI.

I did some OCing, and leaving everything else auto, I am now running at 4.037GHz (475x8.5). Idle it runs at 2.8GHz, 1.1v and a temp of about 30c. Under load at 4.0 it gets up to about 1.3v, and 60c. During 11 hours of prime, not a single core got over 62c.

Just to give an idea of how it runs. It posted at 500x8.5, but wouldn't load windows, and it's been on since Saturday morning without a problem. I could also probably take off some of the "auto" settings and get it running a little better.

My question is, is it relatively safe to keep it clocked at these speeds, or should I only push it up when I am really using the CPU. I just don't want to burn out the CPU in 6 months or something.

Thanks!

Your voltage and temps are within Intel warranty spec (although your OC voids that). Intel says it will last 3+ years in your situation.

I would think your mobo would show wear before anything else at 475FSB on a quad.

Did you leave CPU termination on Auto by any chance?? If left in Auto those will be WAY to high and kill your CPU, you can see the 1.85v being used by looking in EasyTune! Please for your CPU's sake find and set a stable setting manually. Maybe >>>
CPU Termination-1.2.1.38
CPU PLL-1.45-1.6

Thanks for the tip! I did watch the vcores with CPU-Z and I never saw anything above 1.3. I'll probably go tweak some settings to get it running a little lower.

As per the new article on AT about the GA-EP45-UD3P - P45, Gery Key says "We have absolutely no concerns about recommending this board for 24/7 500FSB+ use."

It looks like they were able to get their Q9550 just a few MHz faster than mine. They also did some more fine tune tweaking that I may try out. They are using the same motherboard, CPU, and similar memory for their tests!

Wow, thanks for the link on AT's writeup on the UD3P @ 500fsb. I am able to do 500*8.5 but will only last a few minutes doing P95 so I guess it was all about my voltages.

But the voltages seem to scare me 🙂
Vcore 1.425V
MCH 1.36V
VTT 1.38V
PLL 1.70V

What that hey, maybe I'll just try it for kicks.

Very nice! IMHO, it might be worth it to back off unless you are in desperate need of more CPU speed. 3.6ghz or so would give your cpu a bit more breathing room, it sounds like you are very close to the maximum your combo will give (mobo/ram/cpu). I got my E5200 to run at 4.25ghz, but I've started to back it off, as my poor 9600GT won't benefit from the cpu speed, and I do little besides watch tv/movies and some very light gaming.

Depends on your wants/needs though.

my .2 cents 😉

Oh no, that's not good. You should immediately sell the CPU to me for well below market value, that will solve the problem 😀

Am I missing something here?

John,

Yes, are are missing the the fact I previously stated "I am now running at 4.037GHz (475x8.5)."
