Q6600 in ati 5850 vs Gtx 470

Hello everyone this is my first post on these forums and I hope I am not to much of a bother. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Well basically I have two separate questions that are linked semi directly.
Firstly however I will start off with my "problem," which is that I have a 4870 512. This is a great card but however in Napoleon total war apparently 512mb does not cut it if I want to run at max settings. So with this spurring my desire to upgrade along with a whole slew of other games that I would like to get a better performance out of I've decided to upgrade to either a 5850 or a 470. (To settle the fact of me just upgrading to a lower model with 1gb I cant justify spending over 100 dollars to get just double my memory with a 5770 or a 48701gb.)

So the first and I guess more important question is running my q6600 at 3.0ghz will this be a horrible bottleneck for either the 5850 or 470(or 4870 for that matter:D). I'm running all these games at 1920x1200 which I believe puts more stress on the gpu as well as I like to run all the games I play with AA and AF as high as possible. I have a good setup in terms of cooling so I will most likely be able to pull off a higher overclock if that's what needed.

The second question is pretty obvious from the title, which do people recommend the gtx 470 or the HD 5850(this of course follows that I will not have major problems with the cpu). I have been leaning towards the 5850 because of temperature etc, however the gtx 470 in a few of the new benchmarks I have seen is competing with the 5870 and doing a good job of it. The 470 evga I am looking at is packaged with just cause 2, a roughly 40 dollar value leaving the adjusted price of the 470 at 290 which is similarly priced to the 5850's.

I'm basically having a horrible time deciding on which card, and I also don't want to upgrade if my cpu is going to keep me at a similar level of performance, by bottlenecking my system.

So to recap :
1. Is Q6600 at 3.0ghz a bottleneck on 470 or 5850?
2. Which card should I choose 470 or 5850?

Again any help will be appreciated, sorry for rambling and thanks again.

Edit: I hope the title is not misleading, if it is I apologize

With a q6600 at that speed a 5850 is better choice.

Yeah. Somehow Radeon's are easy on CPU's. There was an article about this and GTX 4X0's shows its true potential if you have an i7, any thing less and it is going to bottleneck. Let me dig up that article.

EDIT: Here is the link.

EDIT: Welcome to AT BTW. :)

Ok so it looks like the 5850 is the way to go for me on this one at least in my current situation. Great article btw yasavy.

However hypothetically if I were to upgrade to a better cpu in the future, how much benefit would I get from the 470 over the 5850. I don't know how long I am going to keep this card for, and I don't want to be stuck with a lesser product because I skimped a bit now.

Thanks again for the quick replies.

Well AMD's next gen cards are gonna be out for Q1 2011 for the high end and Q4 2010 for the midrange cards. so you might not be keeping either card for very long if you upgrade frequently.

If you are happy to overclock the 5850, they do so excellently by all reports I have seen on here and in reviews, my own experience included.

You should be easily able to get to stock GTX 470 performance if not exceeed it. Of course, you could also overclock the GTX 470, but it's already a pretty power hungry and hot GPU to start with...what is your PSU?

As for the value of JC2, its retail value may be $40 (or whatever), but unless you had intended to buy the game in any event, you are still spending $40 more that you otherwise wouldn't ;)

That said, if PhysX or CUDA matters to you, get the GTX 470.

Your CPU is absolutely fine for even a GTX480/5870 at those settings.

Well Skurge I have not seen much on the next ati cards, but I gathered they are a kind of hybrid between this generation and their real next generation. So if anything I would probably be updating on the "northern islands" card (I thinks that is what they are called). So I will probably own this card for a couple of years.
I am tempted to wait for the next generation from Ati but its summer and I have a lot of time to kill.

Its winter here :D

Anyway, You haven't told us the prices you've got for the two cards yet.

If electricity is very expensive where you live +2 for the 5850.

I say that relatively tongue in cheek-

Hmm tried posting links to my psu and the two cards however I don't think it worked correctly.

If it didn't I have a 750watt psu (CORSAIR CMPSU-750TX)

The 470 is the Evga stock (
EVGA 012-P3-1470-AR GeForce GTX 470)
(at 330$)
The 5850 is the Asus 5850(
ASUS EAH5850 DirectCU /2DIS/1GD5)
(at 320$) I can't seem to find a stock 5850 that I like to allow for overclocking.(because of the lack of voltage control on other models)

If you guys have better cards to recommend go ahead I'm happy for any input you have.

There are a lot of new cards for cheap on FS/FT forum.

Like this, A new Gigabyte 5870 for $320 or this a Diamond reference 5850 for $270.

Be patient and keep a lookout for deals.

Are you in the US BTW?

Yeah well the cheapest 5850 I can seem to find is 295$ but I think those models do not have voltage control which will hamper my efforts for overclocking.
Again if anyone has a better recommendation for either the 5850 or the 470 I am all ears.

Yeah I live in the US, sorry haven't updated my profile yet.
I might be a bit of a stickler but when it comes to buying something like a gpu I like to stick with new hardware. Thanks for the links though.

5850 with voltage overclocking

If you can get a gtx 470 for only 15$ more I'd still get the gtx though.

Thanks Russiansensation but that's not making my decision any easier ^_^. So I'm guessing the break down of gpus is 5850<470<5870 or are they just a big jumble?
