As far as the suspension... sure, it sucks, but they had to discipline him no matter how cool the prank.

Why?

Rival schools are always going to do stupid things to each other.

It's better than something destructive... like when my high school spelled our school name in diesel fuel on the rival school's field... who retaliated by tearing down one of our field goal posts. I believe the kids involved from both schools got pretty much the same punishment as this.

Not saying they should throw the kid a parade, but I think something like a couple of detentions would be more suiting... IF they really felt the need to punish him.
The "pussification", as another poster put it, comes from NOT making someone accountable for their actions. Ask the kid if the punishment fit his "crime". You may find he agrees. I am sure he expected to be reprimanded after this prank, but felt it was worth the risk. It's not like they aren't going to let him graduate.

But what was the harm done by the prank? What damages did it cost, outside of maybe a quick ego kill? It wasn't violent, hostile, malicious... it didn't put anyone out or inconvenience someone... it was clean humor. Possibly the ONLY thing I could see as being wrong is the fact that it said "we suck", which some people consider offensive.

If it were my kid, he'd be getting a pizza party to celebrate.

The video posted the other day with the kids crossing the street for 5 minutes straight was about 50 times worse, and even still that was clean humor.

Awesome. Companies should be climbing over each other to employ that guy.

As far as the suspension... sure, it sucks, but they had to discipline him no matter how cool the prank.

Why? His prank was completely unoriginal. I believe it was Yale students who did the same thing to Harvard alumni a few years ago (same wording). But they were just copying some Caltech students who did something similar at a game between two other teams (Stanford and someone else?) a few decades ago (they had them spell out Caltech).

No one claimed it was original and the guy himself admitted to copying the idea,
"Garchar said he was inspired by a similar prank pulled by Yale students in 2004, when Harvard fans were duped into holding up cards with the same message."

Anyone who things the administration should just look the other way and not give this guy some sort of slap on the wrist is just not thinking clearly. I'm not saying I agree or disagree with the punishment he received, but there had to be something done. I am sure some of the fans who were duped into this prank were outraged and calling for his head on a platter.
Personally, I would have laughed about it.

Why? It's a harmless prank.
Punishment? Why, because some people got mad? Because some people can't get over their own hurt pride and ego?
He didn't hurt anyone or anything.

Who cares??? It doesn't really matter who's done it before or who will do it after, what matters is that you've done it. Wait, have YOU done anything?

I give the kids the cool points for doing it. So long haters.

I may agree with your opinion, but do you honestly think the admin should just do nothing about it? That is my point.

Mosh, you have odd opinions sometimes.

Yes, the admin shouldve done nothing.

It was a prank, and caused absolutely no disruption of any kind. What was he being punished for?

the fact that he got suspended makes it that much cooler. Now he's a martyr instead of just playing a harmless prank ;)

Here, here! I am actually moving in a couple months, but I still really like this city.

Another funny thing about this is how long it has been since the two Hilliard teams have played against each other.

Okay... but ISS is the type of thing that only holds a student like this back from achieving, learning to plan, and being creative/intuitive (even though it wasn't an original idea, it had to have taken some ingenuity). If ISS happens in his school district like it did mine (and it likely does as it's the same state), he now has 3 extra days of absence and 3 days of suspension on his record, which COULD discourage some colleges from accepting him, COULD discourage some employers from hiring him, etc. Want punishment? Fine, make him go to the rival school and give and apology over the PA system or clean up trash at the opposing team's field. That's a punishment that fits the offense... even though I highly disagree with this being something so wrong.

If this happened 10-20 years ago, the school would have laughed it off, he would have MAYBE gotten a stern talking to from the principal, but never any more than a couple detentions.

kinda tired of arguing my position. i've said the school had to do some sort of punishment, as per their code of conduct. i never said i agreed with the punishment handed out.

keep me posted as to whether you hear that he couldn't go to the college of his choice because of this incident.

LOL. The school's faculty should get over themselves and let the kid off with a slap on the wrist. This is the funniest thing I've seen in a long time.
Seriously. It's only a high school football game. Definitely not anything worth losing sleep over. They need to stop whining.

I have a general dislike for practical jokes, but this one is terrific. Heck, if I was on the wrong side of it I think I'd give the kid a pat on the back for his cleverness. Seriously, it's crazy that the kid should get punished for something completely harmless and non-destructive like this.
