Ok I have made a decision because I need a computer now and cant wait.

I am thinking about:

ASUS A8N Motherboard
AMD 64 4000+

Now I just need memory (best for this board/platform) and a video card (SLI). Your opinions please?
 
athlon64 4000? WOAH!


id suggest getting a 3000/3200 and using the saved cash for dual video cards. you can always easily OC those CPU's to 4000 speeds. (see sig)

My RAM suggestion

as for video, pick up a couple of these if you downgrade your CPU, you should be able to easily afford 2 of these beasts.
 
I also read that the MSI boards are a bit better but in the past I had issue with them. I know they always get better but ASUS has been good to me. I am running a 800 Deluxe now OC very high stable on air! I have a 3.0GHz OC to 3.4 stable.
 
That link says AMD 3500 and it goes to a 4000+ 🙂 Shouldnt some Ocz ram be better? I am getting all confused now what to do! LOL I also just ne 1GB of RAM - seriously whats 2 going to do for me?
 
Those are 1GB DDR500 sticks. OCZ doesn't have any competing products.

2GB is going to do a lot more for you than SLI will... :roll:

What games do you play? EQ2, The Sims 2, and the mods for a lot of FPS games all benefit from 2GB

Not exactly, sport.

All the chips come from the same wafers and are made from the same silicone. The only advantage of the 4k+ is that it was tested by AMD to run stably at that speed. As far as going even 50 MHz faster, there's not guarantee on that and there's also no guarantee that a 4000+ will OC better than even a 3000+. Your logic is...logical, but it doesn't apply in this case.

If you have lots of $, which it appears you do then this may not even bea factor.
 
NOT true in this case

The 4000 is from 130nm process.
The winchesters are from 90nm
Completely different FAB lines.
The 90nm will overclock more.
 
Interesting. I have been out of the loop a bit. What is the 3800+ built on? You think if I get a 3500 it will OC to a 4000? Or a 3800 OC past the 4000 or a 4000 OC will get me the highest speed? I agree with your logic about chips being tested etc. I believe that - however all my past experience has shown that even the highest chip vs the lowest chip oc to each chips highest settings - the fastest processor will always win.

Now I am thinking about getting

Now for memory and decide on a CPU speed.
 
Bottom line it looks like if I went all MSI (mobo and Video card) or Asus (mobo and video card) then I am still going to have a screaming machine w/amd 4000+ - One is better one way and another is good the other way. But bottom line they are both machines. To make things even more complicated what about getting one Ultra 6800 PCI instead of the 2 6800GTs?

Also I do more desktop apps then gaming - however when I do game its COD - Doom3 - Half Life 2 right now.....was thinking of picking up Far Cry too. But I want to have something that I dont need to upgrade for a while again.

Memory I think I decided on:

What's your display? SLI for a LCD would be incredibly stupid.

However I am thinking of upgrading to a 8ms LCD monitor shortly. Possibly a larger screen to hang on the wall or somethin and use the other video out to display a picture. I am not sure yet. I own a large company (www.alphab2b.biz) and my office is at home while everyone works for me at our distribution warehouses except for my personal assistant. Lets me do many things - however my budget for this project is 2K and I dont need anymore HDs (6 Hitachi 400GB ATM) or anything else. Just upgrading the main stuff.

I do think there will be a difference though even with a LCD. I have an old Radeon 9800Pro now and running P4 3.0 OC 3.4 - with 1GB ram
 
My bad - I thought by glancing at that link it was a AGP - But if dual SLI is not going to be best for my LCD as you say why bother at all with it? I guess bottom line I will be running at 1280x1024 so I dont need 2 SLI cards for the 1600 resolution. So you maybe right.....hmmm - choices choices.....

Plus my office alway runs hot and I am planning on removing most of these HDDs because of that reason and put them in a rack or something elsewhere because they are just are for storage anyway. 1 400GB would be sufficiant. 1 HD, 1 CPU and the Video card will keep it cooler and run quiter and cooler then 6 HDDs and 2 Video cards for sure! I also have some CMX512-3200 sticks now I could still use but feel its prob better to upgrade that too!
 
You like that patriot memory? You have some? Because now if I am not buying two video cards I will pop 2 sticks of those instead for 2GBs of ram.

and a new monitor now! 🙂 Maybe - I am not that rich! - Whada think?
