END RESULT: Was finally able to purchase at the 3rd Best Buy I tried (Durham, NC): $160.11 after tax
THE RUN-AROUND:
1) Best Buy #1: There was a shelf card showing the card for $199, but no cards on the shelf. A clerk looked it up in the computer and saw there were 4 in stock. He went to look for them in the back and couldn't find any. Called over a few other clerks, and they pow-wowed. I overheard them saying that 3 other people had come in looking for the card, and they've looked all in the back and can't find them anywhere. The clerk apologized, and directed me to another BB, 10 miles away, which had 6 in stock, according to the computer.
2) Best Buy #2: There was NOT a shelf card. I told the clerk that the computer said there were 6 in stock here. He looked it up in the computer, said sure enough, and went to the back. He came back 5 minutes later, apologized, and said that he's not allowed to sell it to me until tomorrow. I asked (nicely) to speak to his manager. I told the manager that plenty of other BB's were selling the card, and that I had driven a decent distance to get here, on the recommendation of BB #1. He was really nice, but said that if Visiontek found out that he sold the card a day early, his store could get fined $10,000. I asked if there was any way to "pre-order" so that I could use the 25% today (the promotion expires at the end of today), but pick it up tomorrow. He said that was impossible. He said the 25% off promotion was no doubt specifically intended to end the day before the HD 4850 went on sale. I said oh well, on to the next BB, and he laughed.
3) Called ahead this time, so as to not waste gas. The clerk said there were 3 in stock. I had him confirm that they were actually there, in the glass case, ready to be bought, and he confirmed. I picked up the card no problem, but it rang up as $199. I showed the cashier the ad, and he called his manager over. She overrid thesystem, and it rang up for $160.11 after tax.
This was really good timing with this deal, because I woke up this morning to a dead computer. I had been planning to wait another year before upgrading, but I decided to just go ahead an get a system now. I was online, ordering parts off of NewEgg when I ran across this thread.
