To be honest there are a ton of fellow NYC liberals who are that idiotic as well, email forwarding b.s. research from websites made in Front Page proclaiming the dangers of vaccination (or how it's all some weird conspiracy). In fact, they have such a loud voice that our pediatrician spoke to us far longer than necessary about the pros/cons of something that should be required.

They're pretty friggin durable when they are young. My son is 15 months old and so far I have stuck his head in a running ceiling fan, he fell off our king size bed, fell down our entire flight of stairs, then this past weekend fell down 2 steps to a concrete patio, and put his hand onto a hot disc brake on the car.

As soon as they can stand and walk, they get into all sorts of trouble.

My son was jumping on the bed when he was 2 and he hit his head on the footrail (solid wood with a nice hard edge) and he had a 1" crease in his forehead that went away after about a year. That really has been the worst injury of his life so far...and he's 9 years old now.

He likes to clomp around in my Sidi motorcycle boots actually. He's managed to scrape himself up pretty good on his bicycle too but nothing compared to that bruise on his forehead from that incident when he was 2. That was kind of scary actually.

As a parent you should know not to question someone else's parenting ability blindly like that. I hate assholes that do that. "Ohh his kid fell down the stairs what a bad parent" then they start smoking their cigarettes in the car with their kid. Everyone has their moments.

before my youngest turned 2 she jumped off the playground at the local park in an attempt to reach the monkey bars that were about 4 feet above her head. needless to say she missed by about 3.5 feet and landed on the ground so hard, even though someone managed to break her fall by catching her under the arms, that she fractured her thigh bone really high up by her hip bone. she had to wear a cast from her waist all the way down one leg to her ankle and down the other leg to her knee. for 6 weeks. she was actually in decent spirits for that time considering that her mobility was reduced to nothing. after she got the cast off i figured the whole experience would temper her personality but she's just as crazy now as she was before.

Children MUST be secured in an appropriate child passenger restraint (safety seat or booster seat) IN THE BACK SEAT OF A VEHICLE until they are at least 6 years old or weigh at least 60 pounds.

This is CA law.

Of all of his accidents that was the only one that was purely my fault. You don't really think of the layout of your house until you are playing around and toss your son in the air. He was about 7 months at the time. He cried for about 10 seconds then went back to whatever.

As a new dad I'm hearing a lot of my older relatives and in laws (especially from the south/Mid-west) say things like "carseats?! in my day, we just strapped a baby onto the armrest!" or other flippant views of current medical knowledge and parenting... My reply is usually "in your day, a lot more babies died." I know some of it's silly but, if a certain practice is leading to infants getting harmed en masse, what's so wrong about our society learning from our mistakes? What I find interesting is the anger attached to the statements about how much better things were back then, but weren't we just collectively ignorant?

Yeah, similar types of people who ride around on top of a very powerful motor resting between 2 wheels, going 80 mph without a helmet. Something like that.

No, I don't have kids, but I try to keep grounded on these matters. I pay attention to what people do (to pick up on anything that may be useful a few years in the future - learn from others' experiences), and if I don't think it's right, I'll question it to try to find out why they think it's right rather than just assuming they are wrong.

My gf's mother said something similar. She isn't against carseats but she has this idiotic logic in her mind that if they made it back then without them..then it must not be that big of a deal.

This mindset is fun.

We also got "made it" without easy access to clean water or good sewage systems.

Motor vehicle accidents are the #1 cause of death for kids, and yet tons of adults ignore studies and statistics about rear-facing car seats, proper installation, booster seats for older kids, etc. We know a lot more about how to keep kids safer in cars now than we did even 20 or 30 years ago, but it boggles my mind that some people seem threatened by adopting new standards and protocols when it comes to car seats.

I do remember crawling around the car when I was ~4y/o, standing in the seat and hanging out the windows. I never wore a seat belt. In retrospect, it was very dangerous, but it sure was a hell of a lot of fun.
