Pull a 9500pro Insert 9600xt

I'm wondering, do I need to do anything with the drivers? If I power down, take out a ATI 9500pro (retail) and insert a ATI 9600xt (retail)?

I'm using 3.10 omegas... Wouldn't the drivers recognize the difference and act accordingly? I'm just asking because I've simply never done it before... Ooo OOo I'm going into uncharted territory *spooky* *shiver*

Heh, thanks for any input guys...

It should work. I pulled out my 8500 and put in 9600 without doing anything to the drivers and it worked immediately, though resolution, refresh rate, and all the custom settings were not where I wanted so I had to set those.

Lanyo, I got 2 seperate responses. That's why I cross post. If you read both topics. You'll see, one topic they recommend me just switching the 2 cards and not messing with drivers. In the other, they recommend the exact opposite, saying I will have tons of problems....

Well, I made my point. 😀

maybe the 9500 pro developed a fault. unless that's the case... seems like a waste of money if he paid for that 9600XT.

i'm talking about stock VS stock

also, a 9500 pro clocked to 9700 speeds would perform nearly as well as a 9700 cuz its 128 bit vs 256 bit

Which doesn't make a huge difference in games today!

I wouldn't change a 9500Pro with a 9600XT. 8 Pipelines vs 4.... I think 8 is winner for the near future.

i'm not talking about memory, i'm talking about memory BUS. there is a huge difference betweem 128 and 256 bit memory bus

well fine shady.. be that way =P. I was talking about overclocked... dude 9600XT heatsink is sexy (really random but yea)

Well, my friend has a p4a (willamette) 1.5ghz with 512mb DDR with his 9600xt. He scored 7200 3dmarks in 2001.

I have p4a (willamette) 1.5ghz with 512mb RDRAM with my new 9500pro. I scored 8700 3dmarks in 2001.

So you guys still think I should take back my 9500pro and get a 9600xt?

Also, I would like to point out, that I spent $234.00 on the 9500pro, and the 9600 xt is $210.00 retail.

Mwave has 9700 pro for $202, which is better than both those cards, but 9500pro>9600xt is not much of an upgrade IMHO.

I don't want to get off topic to much. But does the 9800 none pro have 8 pixel pipelines?

Thanks, Ruckas-

Yup, and so did your 9500 pro!!!. Your shiny new 9600XT has only 4. So, in a way, you downgraded.

I don't understand why the 9600xt would have 4 pixel pipelines. I wish I understood how video cards worked. I wonder if there is a website that explains what does what... hmmmm

The 9500 series scores on 3Dmark2001 are inflated when you compare them to actual game benchmarks. I would give a small edge to the 9600XT but at high resolutions like 1600x1200 the 9500pro would probably have the edge. A 9500pro and 9600XT are generally very close in performance so if the 9600XT is cheaper you could potentially save money and get HL2 free.

This review has a 9600XT and 9500pro in it ?
