Ah wtf.... now I need to look up what British people call pubs.

They are places with comfy seats, maybe a pool table, they might serve food (most do) and you can sit and have a pint, quiet music (if any)

A bar is a place you go to get drunk, with music playing loudly in the background.

Yeah I wouldn't know where to find a place like that around me. When I go out, it's always to a place with loud music, loud people, food, beer, pool (a "bar" by your definition even though tons of places have the word "Pub" in it but don't fit your definition)

Hmm that's a shame, it's my favourite kind of night out, somewhere you can sit and talk to your friends while getting drunk and playing drinking games etc. Without having to shout.

I go to a local bar for trivia night every Wednesday. My team has had some success in the past but not as of late. I find it enjoyable nonetheless. I do best in the geography/history and music rounds, and I also have yet to answer a question about James Bond movies incorrectly (and I don't even know probably half of the stuff a true Bond aficionado does).

Awesome! Bond and Technology are my key subjects!

There is a European style 'pub' here in WA that serves Cajun/Irish/British food, make their own beer, have Irish bands, etc. Very nice inside, and food is pretty decent such as the bangers n' mash, sheppards pie, jambalaya, etc. Bars are fun for a few years, but I always tired of how loud they usually were along with the shitty beer and food. If you ever find a UK style pub, try it sometime.

I agree with every thing in this post.

But I go to the pub to be loud.

you are thinking of a club. stop spoiling respectable drinking holes. pubs are for conversation and drinking, not for asshats with popped collars.

if music is blaring in the background, then it is not a pub.

So true. I bet if you were to open a true pub near a college campus, they would need to provide instructions on how it is supposed to work. A nice pub with good food and beer is a wonderful place. No TV's for bonus points. What is wrong with being able to enjoy company of your fellow man with a pint or four and be able to converse at a normal level? It is a beautiful thing really.

lol, Marathon Taverna in Portland is definitely not a club. (but it does have its occasional case of popped collar douches)

Yes! Also I completely agree there's nothing worse than a perfect pub but TV's on everywhere showing sports so everyone is staring at them not talking.

Why stop there? How about cell phone blackout box too? Whats more funny than your old lady coming into the pub @ 1:27 in the AM to drag your ass home because she can't reach you on the cell? This would also spur the use of the word 'wench' again.

Agreed. If you go to a great pub with lock in's, you often don't get signal anyway 😀

Pub quiz last night, I didn't know the answer to one of the questions that I thought you guys might:

"What do Americans call chimneys?"

Googled it, and it seems to be "smoke stacks..."? Is that right?

It's a matter of scale or use. Factories, smelters, and power plants have smoke stacks. Houses have chimneys. Choo choo trains have smoke stacks.

Hmm Interesting, so assuming that the question was aimed at homes, you would also call them chimneys?
