firstly, dont declaw a cat unless u live in a high rise building and there is no way this cat is ever going outdoors, BUT dont do it to a cat thats adult and has lived outdoors, thats is just grossly unfair on the cat.
secondly have your cat neutered, although this wont always stop it bringing little friends back to play (dead or alive) it will reduce the chances a little, it will also stop the smell almost completely, it can make your cat a little lazy sometimes, but not if you play with the cat yourself, me and my mum play hide and seek with mine and he loves it. sometimes he hides, sometimes he seeks..lol...oh and feed your cat 2 wet meat meals a day at regular times, and the odd dry biscuit type stuff a couple times when he asks, well fed cats hunt less.

I guess this might not suit all cats, but mine is neutered (albeit once he was 2 years old, broke a paw so thought it best to curb his antics a bit, still has part of a steel plate in the leg...hard bastard!..heh), is fed regularly, has flea drops every 3 months and only catches mice once in week at most, birds hardly every but then im in London and there are not many living in trees, they mostly nest in eaves of houses nowadays. Oh and he isnt some tubby lapcat either, he is a lean mean meowing machine! :)

Everyone's living situation is different, so I wouldn't say ALL cats should be outdoors. But no way should ALL cats be kept indoors. They're animals, they need to be outside. My dad's cat is going on 15 years old and he still spends all night outside, and he's still an excellent hunter. He taught himself to eat the animals, not just drop them on your doorstep like most cats. He's perfectly healthy, and it's because he is an outdoor cat. A flea collar deals with fleas and the occasional trip to the vet for worms isn't such a big deal.

I'm not debating people's living conditions, rather, I'm addressing the simple facts that cat owners must face if they allow their felines to roam at will outside. Of course they're animals and are better outside, but owners need to weigh what they consider more important: a cat who is happy they can prance around and kill things, or one they can keep safe from being pancaked by cars, mauled or killed by dogs, chased off by other cats, poisoned or abducted by strangers, or one that simply decides to run away. And I'll have to disagree on the pest control - collars don't do the whole job, and the variety of internal alternatives can give the cat anything from organ failure to chronic diarrhea.

My neighbor lets her cat go outside whenever. It's covered in scabs from getting in fights, is missing about 3 inches off it's tail from a close call with a dog, had two air-rifle pellets removed from it's leg and always seems to be shedding and smelly. Wears a flea collar, but the last time I gave it a pet (the elevator butt action thing) I saw fleas run for cover (although I have no idea if it's a new collar or not). Oh, and this cat is a replacement for the first two she owned.

But hey, if it's your pet, do what you with it.

this may sound mean on my part, but i have kept her in and she is miserable. i would rather her enjoy her life and if she gets hit by a car, well, i will deal with it. i would not want somebody to oprress me so i can live a long life that i hated, i would rather live fast and die young if that was what was in the cards.

she is fixed, but maybe i will start with a can of soft food once a week, maybe that will help the problem.

we also have rabbit around here and quail a couple of blocks away, i hope she doesn't mess with the rabbits and hopefully the quail are to far away for her to get, they would such easy pickigs for her....in the summer time she would always bring in those little geckos, i would take them from her and put them outside since the most damage was done to their tail, tap her lightly on the rear and tell her no. she stopped bringing them in pretty quick.

Take off the stupid bells and put a camera on the cat. Setup a website.

PROFIT!

your ideas crack me up, a buddy of mine works for a large company that deals with video surveillance, maybe i could hook up the "killer pussy cam" with one of those small wireless cameras, put a high gain antenna on the back of my condo and see what she does.... i will need a small camera, the cat is only about only about the size of a normal 6mos kitten, she was the runt of the litter, she was so cute, we bottle fed her, not knowing what kind of terror she would wreak on the critters in her domain....

Best answer yet.
Really, Get a doggie door that only opens with a transponder on the collar. Restrict her movement that way.
