I appreciated the recomendations I got on my other post, you guys are nice to help out. I've narrowed my choice down to two PSUs and was wanting some input from you guys.

I'm thinking the Antec True Power 480W or the Fortron FSP400-60PFN.

Tom's Hardware seems to like the Antec better and the Anandtech reviewers seem to like the Fortran better.
Antec
Fortran

Thanks for any advice

"I'm thinking the Antec True Power 480W or the Fortron FSP400-60PFN!"

I bought both of them a while back, both performed very well. Antec just looked better packaged. Fortron had solid railes. Could not make up my mind, so I put both of them up for sale (first one sells, goes).

To my surprise, Fortron sold first >> me kept Antec... no regrets :)

My recommendation: Enermax 465. It's got 50% more amps on the 12v rail (the most important by far), more amps on the 3.3v rail, and still costs less than an Antec TruePower 480.

Get the Antec, it has more 22A on the 12V which far more than 18V on the fortron.

both are excellent...

for some reason though, the fortron wouldn't work on my abit motherboard (ic7) but worked perfectly fine on an asus p4p800.

strange.

currently running an antec 430w truepower with modded rails...
:)

So am I. That's why I told him to get the Enermax, it's a better psu. I just ordered the same one I recommended, because I don't like my +12v rail hovering between 11.52 (load) and 11.58 (idle).

I am going through a PSU delemma right now. Seems like my Enermax 470 is not cutting it, while my TP380 is somewhat better (OC wise). I have purchased Several PSU over the last 8 weeks, and (while I stiill need to swap out some parts to confirm) if I need to purchase another I am buying a PC P&C 510ATX or 510 Deluxe.

I am sick of fooling around.

As someone who actually owned both I can tell you the enermax is superior to antec where it counts voltages. They are all within .05 of their ratings even wildly overclocked. Before I fryed the "true 480" it's voltages would be within .5 , this is an order of magnitude dudes. The issue with enermax (or any PSU for that matter) is noise. Antec makes a little less, but they dole out less power too so it stands to reason.;)

Get the enermax which has >32A accross the board. I modded mine by cutting out the fans, putting duck tape over all the back and side fins, then cutting a hole in the bottom for a 120mm. It's silent now.

Ya the dual 15A rails suck on that model. I like one big fat 12V rail.

BTW what are you looking for? Silence? True power? High power? You may have to "customize" if you want it all. I've been though about a dozen PSUs recenty and none fit the bill perfect without extensive mods.

This is for my gaming machine. All I want is stable power. (although I couldn't live with a Delta fan)

I was having trouble getting my 3.0C past 3.25 with my IC7 Max3 and Enermax PS. AS an experiment, I put the processor into my Sonata HTPC with a Giga GA-8IK1100 and I am hiting 3.5 at default voltage. I swaped out the ram to determine that that was not the problem. This weekend I will Put the Gigabyte in the case with the Enermax PSU. If it doesn't work, I'm figuring the PSU isn't cutting it, if it does, then the motherboard is suspect. But, I had the same problem with DFI 875 Infinity.

EDIT: Quick disclaimer: thhe enermax was a Newegg refurb, so it might have problems under load, and my HTPC uses a 9600XT where as the gaming machine uses a 9800P (which might be a power hog) but would indicate the need for more power.

Well I'm sorry you bought a refurb PSU. I don't buy refurbs for the reason I want to break it not anyone else.:p

Seriously part of your problem is the slipt 12V rails which are too low for overclockers. This is supposedly done to give "clean" power to the mobo while HD's and other periperials run off the other rail. This "feature" is BS becasue all the loads are on spinup of these drives which happens when you boot, no other time of signifigance. meanwhile the whole time your system is on the mobo, chip, AGP etc underpowered big time.

Again, get the enermax's with >32 amps accross the board. There are about 10 models which do this.

And buy new.

Me too. Live and learn.

But, my point is that the PC Power & Cooling is widely considered the best available and at this stage I want the peace of mind to know problems are highly unlikely PSU related. But I am sill a cheapskate at heart and am having a hard time justifing the extra 30 bucks for for the Deluxe over the ATX.

Anyone with countering opinions on the PC P&C are encouraged to set me straight.

PC P&C is the most overated, overpriced stuff out there along with magic RCA cables. They are made by sparkle. Get a Sparkle if you want PC P&C.

Meh, go with the Enermax, I doubt the PC Poewr and Cooling would give you anymore of an advantage in an overclock. If it's not stable with voltages its defective. Return it!

yeah i've tryed the antec 350, 400, 430, 480, and 550
good powersupplies imo
i don't think the 480 was moddable because i didn't have the true controll version, but the true blue ones do look cool.
i almost got a pc power and cooling 510 because they are pretty good and the company is in the same county as i live, but i decided it wasn't worth twice the price so i said forget it and i'm happy with my 550.

i usually turn the voltage rails down a bit below spec because i find that this lowers my psu temps a good 5 to 10c
and doesn't affect stability as long as i don't go too low

also the amps on 3v and 5v rails are much more important imo than the 12v rails
many of the cheap 400 or 450watt psu's (like the ones at compusa) just beef up the 12v rails but have the same amps on the 3 and 5 as a 300 or 350watt psu might
so look out for that

good luck

edit: basically if yur spending over 100 bucks on a psu you might just be geting ripped off :)

also one thing i should note:

when i had 13 fans, 4 hard drives, cd burner, overclock cpu/mem/vid, i found that my 430 would sag a good amount on the rails

that's why i got the 480 and later the 550 which both seemed to have plenty of power for my crazy systems
