PSP

so, I have a PS3, and am enjoying the HD experience.

something has been bugging me though. I sort of want a PSP. Not sort of want, but really want. But I am trying to figure out, is it a strong urge to buy it, or is it a quest to truly own it and enjoy the fact that I own it? If its only an urge, should I try an resist? I have urges to spend, me thinks. I can kind of obsess over something, until I finally let go and buy whatever I am obsessing over. But at times, this obsession leads to never using what I bought.

I will be selling my DM4 that I bought, thinking I was going to get into speedball with my roomies and the OSU paintball team. however, it has gone unused. and me thinks I want to buy something in replacement of it.

however, there are two things competing, and that's either a new videocard/cpu purchase down the road, or the PSP now.
which it should be, I have no clue.
while there are a few upcoming computer games I really want to play, my computer as it is now will have trouble displaying the great looking graphics. Crysis and any UE3-based game will probably struggle if not break my current system (Athlon64 3700+ (S939), 512mb DDR400, GeForce 7800GT). Since I am on the aging S939 platform, I would either just spend some money on a near-top S939 chip, or also have to buy an AM2-based motherboard and well.. that will be extra moneys. that presents a problem, as the GeForce 8800GTS alone costs what I expect to get from the DM4 sale, so I would be spending a good deal over that to have a really good system ready for future gaming. (replace 512mb with 2x1gb DDR400, upgrade videocard, upgrade CPU)

so.... should I just get the PSP instead?
I look to enjoy some of the features that allow the PSP to be used with the PS3, hoping that gets further developed.
but I also just want to play some of the games.
I have seen Killzone: Liberation has gotten a good review at GameSpot, and I of course would have to get MGS: Portable Ops. But that also leaves me with a want for something just plain fun, like maybe Daxter, and hopefully the Ratchet and Clank to be released in February. But I also might want Liberty City Stories, but not sure, as I was never HUGE into the GTA series. It was fun to play with friends and just rack up the stars, but that's not really what the portable version would be about for me. It would be about the game itself, singleplayer, and I am not sure if thats a game I want then.

Either way, I expect the PSP to get better in its game selection. I don't see the system dying off soon, thankfully, like other portables have did when paling in comparison to Nintendo's offerings. Does anyone expect it to fall off the face of the earth any time soon with it having at least a couple really good games, some almost being must-player worthy? (Especially MGS: Portable Ops, of which I have heard as being THE must-play game).

basically, should I, or shouldn't I, buy the PSP?

UPDATE: it has been purchased
now the owner of the following:
PSP Entertainment Pack (PSP, 1gb MS Pro Duo, ATV Offroad Fury: Blazin' Trails, and Lords of Dogtown UMD movie)
Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops
WTF: Work Time Fun
heh heh..WTF is nothing short of hilariousness and good ol' fun 🙂

oh, and yes.. the poll has been removed as it's well.. pointless

when is the price going to come down on this thing?

Probably when Sony will be more costumer-friendly AKA never.

I have actually heard good things in terms of their PS3 support. I had to call them and had a good experience, but it also was just a very simple ground-loop problem that I overlooked.

PSP with a custom firmware rocks. I love mine and my PS3. 🙂

whats the newest custom firmware allow? what is out there in regards to the homebrew movement? i.e. what are good homebrew games?

I've had mine for almost 2 years, and I love it. I used to run home brew on it back when it had 1.5 firm ware but since gotten rid of it. I dl the newest firm ware for it and supposedly they will be coming out with downloadable ps games for it, I think that would rock if they were going to re-release a lot of the older os games for it for they had a lot of good one that are still fun to play to this day. But I use mine for everything, games (lots of fun and great graphics compared to my sons DS), movies, music, photos, and on line content.

Need to get a bigger 4 gig card for it though, the 1 gig is too small for it now.

I had a bit of a "hands on time" with a PSP this weekend. Got to play Madden and Medal of Honor. I couldn't stand the thumbstick.

I'll stick with the DS for some portable gaming enjoyment. Very different level of graphics and games I know, but it is just more "fun".

Plus at $40 a pop I just can't bring myself to spend that much on nuetered versions of PC & PS2/Xbox games.

well there are already a few downloadable PS1 games on the PlayStation Network. right now the PS3 is just the middleman for PS1 downloading, but soon the PS3 will have the ability to play the PS1 downloads.

This is the major problem with the PSP. If you go look at Gamerankings.com you will actually find that the PSP has more games with an average rating of 70% or higher than the DS (or did last I checked). So it's not like it lacks for quality games. The big gripe is that many of the good games are just copies of their console counterparts. I think many people simply want original games that can't be had on home consoles and that's what holds the PSP back.

Despite that fact that the analog stick is sort of crappy, it's still better than trying to use that lame touch screen analog "stick" that games like Mario 64 DS attempt to use. So, IMO, if what you want is some decent FPS or racing game action in a portable format then I think the PSP is the way to go. The DS simply lacks the graphics power an controls to do them justice. But if you are looking for original content and games that are just fun, then I'd say go with the DS. Games like Castlevania simply kick ass and the PSP has nothing to compete with them.

One thing I am excited about for the PSP is the PS1 games. Specifically, I'm looking forward to Twisted Metal 2.

That's the key. We've got both, and the DS is more fun. If the system is intended for gaming, go DS. If you plan on watching a lot of video and maybe playing some games, get the PSP.
Now that I've heard that DQ9 is coming out for DS, and with Phantom Hourglass looming, I'm thinking I want to sell my PSP so I can quit hijacking the kid's DS 😛

i have the original firmware so it's great for homebrew emus + sony's official (cr*cked) ps1 emulator on the go.
i've heard the newer psp mobo's have "trouble" with this so do your research before pulling the trigger 🙂
umd-wise metal gear and tekken5 are probably the best you'll find.....
final fantasy tactics remake is looking to be another must have title.

if you want variety ds is probably a better choice. or just buy both.

Been thinking about getting one too, mostly so I could mod it and play emulators on the go. There is a way to check if the PSP has the newer TA-802 motherboard without voiding warranty, but you have to open up the UMD drive.

Tech toys are an endless money pit that bring you empty joy and only fuel a deeper want for something new.

Buy a book.

(I just got an XBOX 360...)

well the games I would be looking to are games made only for the PSP, but while based on franchises available on the big consoles, are still unique. Daxter is a unique game in the Jak and Daxter universe, Ratchet & Clank: Size Matters, is a unique PSP R&C game. MGS😛O is a game that is completely unique to the system, and is actually somewhat of a direct sequel to MGS3.

Yeah, I love the Ratchet & Clank series. It was my favorite series on the PS2 and the game I'm looking forward to more than any other on both the PS3 and PSP.

The newest custom firmware 3.02 OE-B lets you play ANY playstation game on your psp. You can convert your (legally purchased and owned) ps1 game into an image file and play it on your psp now. However, you do need a downgradeable psp first. Anything below 2.80 can be downgraded to 1.50 and then flashed with 3.02 OE-B.

It's awesome. I've been playing FFVII on my PSP for the past few days (full-speed). 😀

By the way, for anyone with a TA-082 motherboard and <=fw2.71, you can downgrade to 1.5 and upgrade to 3.02OE-A now (and then apply the update to OE-B of course). 😀

Also, fw2.80 systems (non-TA-082) can be downgraded now too.

If you upgraded using the official Sony Update Eboots then you won't be able to rip your own games. This hack is only for the custom 3.02OE-B firmware made by Dark_Alex. Pspupdates.com and Psphacks.com for more info.

So what's the advantage of being able to run Homebrew? I wanna upgrade ours to 3.03 from 1.5, but I see that the last one to support it was 2.8.

Wow, that PSone thing really makes me want one.

I was originally saving up for a car, but a guy called today and said he would buy my other one, although its not for sure...

I will have to go check out Gamestop tommorow. Hopefully they have some older firmware used ones.
