Am I missing something that makes this thing worthwhile?

eh? the backlit screen has exellent resolution and contrast, and from my experience, it's built like a tank. why would you make up details that you know are not true?

And your details are true for what reason? Because you said so?

Make them up? I looked at the damn thing in a store for Christ's sake. The controls felt like they'd be dead in a few months and I could barely see the screens because they weren't bright enough. The thing reminded me of one of those $10 pocket video poker or tetris games.

ok, let's look at fact here...
the following reviews praise the DS for it's excellent screen and build quality:

http://arstechnica.com/reviews/hardware/nintendo-ds.ars
"The display is truly backlit, not like the bottom lighting the SP has, and there's no dark spots on the display at all. The colors are bright and text is easy to read. The screen is a respectable 256X192 resolution, up from the SP's 240X160. That means that while playing GBA games you'll see a slight border around the screen, but the added clarity and sharpness more than makes up for it. ...feels solid and well put together in your hand..."

http://ds.ign.com/articles/564/564540p1.html?fromint=1
"Since the Game Boy Advance uses 240x160 resolution, and each Nintendo DS screen is 256x192, the image is slightly bordered. The GBA games look fabulous on the Nintendo DS screens since the system uses backlighted LCD screens instead of frontlighting as on the Game Boy Advance SP. Colors are bright and vibrant played on the Nintendo DS system..."

i know there are impressive reviews at gamespot and other sites as well, but i'm too lazy to post the links up.

and then of course, there's the common sense knowledge that anything Nintendo makes is built like a tank anyways... heck, do you know anyone who's ever had a broken SNES controller? Honestly, try not to be so angry and ignorant at the same time... it's stuff like this thats really detrimental to the forums. I have nothing against blatant fanbois like yourself as long as you guys try not too impose your stupidity on others.

eh? it's weird how not a single major online review site agrees with you. After testing it out for a few minutes, I came to the conclusion that the buttons were probably too small for my hand- but other than that, they felt pretty much like the Gameboy SP. But iono, maybe Nintendo decided after all these years to lower their standards for their most recent handheld (not likely)... and in a couple months, you'll start hearing about DS's falling apart (even less likely), or controls that stop responding (maybe a first for Nintendo according to you).

From the Ars article -

The only downsides I've found so far have been a slight buzz and crackle when you crank the speakers up, and I do wish you could adjust the brightness of the screen. Some parts of Metroid, even with the backlighting, were hard to see. I'm also scared we'll see too many developers not know what to do with the unique features of the system and go back to making cookie cutter action games instead of branching out with the gameplay as Nintendo and Sega have so ably done with their launch titles. The rest of the launch line up is mediocre at best.

It was the metroid demo that I was messing around with and with the overhead lighting in the store it was unplayable.

I can understand the comment about the screens as these sort of devices are usually secured down and hard to get a good angle on. Throw 2 screens into the mix, and it's nearly impossible to get a good view of both.

As for build quality, in the time I've spent with the DS, it seems to be as solidly built as previous Nintendo handhelds...you see how kids treat their Gameboys, I really don't think Nintendo would decide to skimp on quality in that department.

I never said whether i liked the console or not, i was just stating facts about it's build quality and screen, and had the sources to support what i'm saying. Fanboyism would be making blanket claims about something, especially when it is not true. i think it was the word "junk" that caused me to stop taking your post seriously. apologies

yeah... i understand what you mean. thats something that can be corrected just by angling the system in a more natural hold, rather than those perfectly upright displays they use at EB.

I'm planning to get a DS sometime. Going to wait till some more games are available, and I actually have the $$$ for it.
