What I'm saying is is that the May 31 is probably Sony's target for full restoration of PSN (PSN Store, Home, everything) but that was supposed to stay internal. Last thing they want to do is promise yet another date and miss it.

It's not that they didn't want to publically set a date and miss it. The reason they didn't want that date getting out that was more because of incorrect interpretations like Newbian's, where people think it means that PSN services will not be back until the 31st.

The implication is that most services will be available sooner (online play in a few days, for example) and everything should be available by May 31. PSN provides many services including software sales, DLC, movie rentals, trophies, online-play/match-making, voice chat, PS Home, Folding@home, etc. If they get online play and trophies online in a few days and the software/DLC market online a few days later and the trophies soon after that, I'm totally OK waiting until later May to rent a movie or some tangental less-important crap.

I really doubt the FBI can do a better job than Sony investigating what happened:

FBI investigates Playstation Network Hacks

What began as a nuisance is turning into a full-blown criminal investigation as the FBI looks into the hacker group allegedly responsible that may have breached Sony's Playstation network.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation is investigating whether Anonymous members were involved in a massive data breach at Sony's online gaming network last month.

That network was compromised by hackers last month, exposing the personal details of an unprecedented 77 million users.

Security professionals, who say they are working in a voluntary capacity, have forwarded chat logs and internet addresses of alleged Anonymous members to the FBI to aid investigation.

These experts said they had fielded questions from the FBI about their operations. The FBI and Sony declined to comment.

Sony said it would take at least "a few more days" to restore service to its beleaguered online PlayStation Network, but failed to offer a solid date.

For weeks Sony has been in the crosshairs on digital vigilantes, forcing the company to shut down several services and issue public apologies and reparations to customers affected.

The attacks also led to the leak of over 10 million credit cards.

The origins spur from a lawsuit brought against a hardware Hacker George Hotz, who for months have been posting exploits of the Playstation 3 system onto his personal website.

In perusing Hotz and those who gained access to his information, Sony teamed with Internet Service Providers, Paypal and even YouTube to gain access to the IP addresses of users who viewed the content.

That move became a rallying cry for hackers to organize and take aim at the Japanese giant, decrying what it saw to be gross violations of digital privacy.

One group, calling it self Anonymous, said that the move was "just the beginning" and that it would "not forgive" the company for its "privacy invasion."

"Where the judicial system has failed, Anonymous will persevere, by standing up for the rights of everyone, not just those who dared to challenge these corporations," the group said on April 14, calling its members to action.

While the group did try to take down the network by flooding Sony servers with requests, it denies it stole the data.

Gotta say, I love how Anonymous says they are sticking up for people, but might have stole credit card information and caused the people to deal without a function. They are really sticking up for us.

Real anonymous didn't have anything to do with this right? Isn't this some shitty small group claiming they're anons and honestly think they're fighting for some just cause rather than being little teenage shitbirds?

The thing is there is no such thing as "real anonymous" and since they claimed doing it in their name it's anonymous that caused it, plain and simple.

Anonymous means jack shit. People keep claiming 'anonymous" is some monolithing thing with power structures and shit.

"Anonymous claims that they didn't hack PSN" vs "Anonymous file was hidden in network"

All of this stuff means NOTHING. You can't say that anonymous claims that they didn't hack PSN because all that means is that one kid claimed that he didn't hack PSN. The very fact that it was hacked by someone we don't know means that he was "Anonymous" There is no singular "Anonymous", all there is tons of completely separate people doing shit under the guise of anonymous.

There is no such thing as "real anonymous" unless by "real" you mean a get together where script kiddies use LOIC because they're so damn "cool" and stick it to the man.

I didn't mean to offend... By "real anonymous" I mean someone who does what they do for the overall "anon cause." I don't really know how to explain it, but "real anon" wouldn't hurt users in order to hurt a company. Some group who thinks they are anons may believe they are doing anons work, but they aren't.

What is real Anonymous? From what I understand, it's a very disorganized collection of hackers with no real leadership other than a handful who run the IRC channels and website.

Reading around, Anon's members have kind of split into two camps now. One that wants to punish Sony but not the PSN subscribers and one that doesn't care.

No truth to that at all, nothing has been announced. The only thing we know about right now is a free month to PS+ and a free year of ID monitoring. They said they are going to look into other ways of making good with the customers but not until they get PSN back up.

I believe the 2 games came from a Sony statement in EU so it is assumed we'll also get 2. Nothing confirmed

Yes, the EU has confirmed that you'll get to pick two games from a selection of five.

Since the EU and NA offerings have been identical thus far, it isn't a stretch at all to assume that the two free games wouldn't happen in North America as well.

I didn't see anyone claiming to speak for Anonymous denouncing the Gawker leak and that targeted users directly to indirectly harm Gawker. The name Anonymous was synonymous with that attack/leak and they never tried to claim that it wasn't their MO because it wasn't "hacktivism." the Sony one IS hacktivism and their past history confirms that they DO target users in the crossfire, so the statement was ridiculous.

My money's still on organized crime or an inside job, not Anon. They're just a convenient scapegoat.

Uh... Anonymous didn't hack Gawker, it was another group called Gnosis. Anonymous never claimed responsiblity for it and Gnosis apparently specifically denied any connection with Anonymous.
