Hey, remember when I said this:
Granted, RRoD didn't even allow you to play offline - making your system dead in the water entirely.

So, it's not even "could",... I actually did.

I only glanced through your post, but my argument is still valid if you can get past my laziness.

If you insisted on comparing the PSN outage to the RROD debacle, you could say that the RROD was worse, since you were typically without a console for a month or more, and many people had multiple RRODs, resulting in even more downtime. At least with the PSN outage, you can still play games. Hard to do that with a 360 when Microsoft had the entire console.

No comparison. I have 2 360s, if one fails I could just play on my other 360. I also have 2 PS3s, but I can't get online with either of them....for almost a month. Neither can any other PS3 owner.

Like others have said, the RROD took out one 360 user at a time. This outage took out every PS3 owner and has rendered a lot of games pretty much useless. For instance Black Ops. Do you think most Black Ops players will say, "ah, it's ok. I'll just play the campaign....AGAIN." I actually know two guy that went out and bought 360s because of the PSN outage.

Well sure, if you have two of each, then the obvious bigger deal would be the PSN outage, but your situation isn't really typical. I look at it as if someone offered you a console that could not go online for a month or no console at all for a month, then you'd probably take the one you could actually use.

A total hardware failure is not comparable to a temporary service outage. Yeah it's annoying to not get online but when your hardware fails you are dead in the water. Completely different situations.

I agree, RRoD is much worse.

That's pretty dumb to claim there is no comparison because YOU have two 360s. "Well I have two 360s so everyone else must have two."

apples and oranges, hardware vs. network. Why is this an argument? They both suck.

Truth, fanboyism, whatever you want to call it.

PSN goes down: Play all you want single player.

RRoD: Play nothing while your system is away for a month.

Whichever one you consider "worse" is subjective, but not being able to play anything at all is worse to me.

I don't use PS3 for any multiplayer so I don't really care about PSN. I've had 3 xbox's fail on me though, which is orders of magnitude worse. Luckily I got in on the gamestop 360 slim trade-in deal so I can finally have a system that works.

This is me, too. The biggest thing for getting back online will be syncing my trophies, lol.

I can understand why people are frustrated for many, many reasons with the PSN downtime and Sony in general, but from a long term perspective, bringing it back online when they're only 95% sure it's secure as opposed to waiting until they're 99.8% sure could be catastrophic for Sony, especially in light of the fact that there are pockets of radical anti-Sony hackers out there that will be raring to try and bring everything crashing back down as soon as Sony flips the switch.

Sony doesn't just have to be as secure as Microsoft or Nintendo or Amazon at this point, they have to strive to be a percentage better to walk out on stage at E3 and tell people, "Yep, this was fucked up, but we've gone back, filled in the holes, crossed our T's and dotted our I's and this isn't going to happen again." Their best move at this point is to have Jack Trenton come out, point blank admit they were lax in their ability to prevent this, and that's not going to happen again.

For people who are just bent on hating Sony and the PS3, that's not going to do much. But those people were pretty much in that club before this happened, and 9 times out of 10, the minute they say something, it becomes immediately obvious.

I don't like Sony much for other reasons, but I do enjoy my PS3. Hopefully they can get past this and the developers who suffer from this downtime will recover and come back stronger for it.

I have a question, and this will probably be dumb. My son was messing with the controller and reformatted the PS3, or at least that is what I am guessing is what happened. Now when I turn it on, it wants me to do the initial set up. Will I be able to recover my PSN id once PSN is back up? I would hate to loose all the trophies I have, and on the PS3 it doesn't have my PSN id.

Yeah, just create a new account and when you go to make your PSN ID tell it you want to recover your PSN account. I hope you remember your password though...lol...I lost pr0d1gy for like 2 years because I couldn't remember the PW.

Yeah, I am sure I remember my password. Now, will my friends still be tied to my account, or will I need to remember all of their names and send them new requests?

Down since 4/21. Wow, almost a month. I guess I never used it as much as I thought.

so now we've degraded to "My console sucks less than your console".
