Ehhh... I slept during a lot of classes, some easy ones like psych 101, and some hard ones like computational fluid dynamics. Realistically, I was unconscious during about 15% of my class time. I studied a lot and got straight As though.

OMG!!!! COLLEGE!!!! Run people, RUN!!!

My god, you sound like one of those who make a big deal out of something small.

Do we live in 20s or 30s? Since when a college became THA COLLEGE!!!??? Come on, way too many people go to colleges and it's not much of a deal.

It's not a military boot camp and you ain't no drill sergeant.

Your whole rant is just silly.

It really is a huge waste of time for most people there.

Being so short on money these days, in terms of being able to afford college on your own, it really just makes me think it's just the cheapest way to get your kids out of the house for the richer parents. Anyone who has to pay their own way no matter if its through working or the military sees things a bit different, because it's like your watching a daycare for 20year olds.

Anyone who has the idea that college is "more than just the education it's the experience" is really just a spoiled moron. If you had to pay for it yourself you wouldn't slack half as much. You can go party for a whole lot less than what your tuition costs. If you miss just one class, you missed half a week. Good job.

your gonna miss out on the real university experience, if you think you are just there for an education you are wrong. I always feel bad for the old people in my classes

The feeling is mutual, since the 'real university experience' is about receiving a rounded and advanced education. You can be a lecherous drunk any old place.

I am consistently puzzled how my peers can miss so many classes (like 90% ) and still manage to pass.
Also, one of my classes; in which I believe the professor may have alzheimers, most people show up like 30-50 minutes late for the end-of-class assignment. Its a 90 minute class :(

It depends a lot on how they grade. If it's all or mostly tests, and the material is drawn from texts, there's little if any reason to need to go to class (so long as you're good at book retention). The same is true of mostly papers, though you usually have to show up at first to figure out what the profs are looking for in the papers.

Nothing I hate more than a class that grades on attendance, but doesn't do anything important in class.

It's not just the "typical" 18-20 year old student .

Colleges are seeing a surge in people 30-45 and older go back to school or attend college for the first time. This typically happens during a down turn in the economy, people go back to school hoping to get a better job or make themselves more valuable. When the economy goes bad college enrollment goes up.

These students are some of the worst, they are lazy and have been out of HS long enough to think they know it all, and feel that their work experience at 7-11 somehow makes them a better student.

I attend and work for a community college in the mid west.....you have no idea how much white trash is actually around you until you see it in a concentrated area....such as a classroom.

A typical student is an out of work, over weight, single mother of two, that smokes, lives in a trailer and is fucking dumber than a bag of hair.

These people are going into nursing and other health programs.....its scares the shit outta me the type of people that will be working ion our hospitals, doctors offices and nursing homes.

It just furthers my resolve to eat healthy, exercise and try to maintain my health so I don't have to encounter one of these dumb fucks later on down the road.

I didn't do shit in college, just like highschool, and ended up with a high GPA in engineering.

But I never distracted anyone else from learning, and I never whined about something that happened because I decided to skip class.

When I was 18-21 I could get by with 4 hours of sleep, a 5 alarm hangover and still stumble to class and get decent grades. Oh and tag college age girl ass while I was there.

I couldn't do any of that at the age of 32 now.

I understand your bitterness.

amen.

OMFG!!! Fullmetal Chocobo you have a second account! Shame on you!
Now I have a few questions:
How did you keep it hidden from me for so long?
What do you want for dinner, since we are now out of leftovers?
Do you want to go to Sam's with me tonight?

And good luck on your 2 tests today!

Some people can get by without doing as much as you, ya know. I didn't go to class for the first two years, didn't even buy books in second year (because I didn't use them first year). I did hand in everything that would contribute to my grade, but didn't do a single other thing. I went to the classes that had a component of the grade for participation or required a certain attendance level to pass. There weren't many like that.

In 4th year I did go to class, and also took notes in a class or two, because shit was hard. I knew exactly what I needed to do to get an A, and after that the marginal gain for my work wasn't worth it.

Basically: Focus on your own education. If the prof gives people leeway, complain to the prof in private. If not, and people are just being idiots/complaining, ignore them.

I thought it was generally accepted that going to college didn't teach you anything, you just get a nifty peice of paper that's supposed to help you make more money. I go to classes when I need to, about 75% of the time. no problems with grades or understanding content. 1/2 the time I show up I'm trying to figure out why I'm wasting my time becase I'm not learning anything.

you're also going to a community college not a top ranked university so expect the prof's to give quite a bit of leeway, 2 year degrees don't carry much weight so most of the prof's don't care much more than a HS teacher does.

I completely fucking agree. I was Navy, 8 years. These college kids are amazingly stupid. Makes my school time easier those, as I'm compared to them in rankings. :)

I hate the fucktards that keep raising their hand giving their dumbass input on every topic that nobody wants to hear. There is 1 or 2 in every class

I've had one dumbfuck in a few of my classes that would try to answer students questions before the teacher got a chance to. Or randomly make some comment to a professor's lecture.

He would wear only two shirts and had a connection between his neck hair and back hair.

People may be attending college for different reasons than you. If their actions (or inaction) do not really impact you, focus instead of how to get the most out of the experience yourself. The military may have given you a sense of discipline that a lot of college students lack, true, but it's your choice to be annoyed by their laziness.

As far as actual disruptions go, basically, tough shit. You can rant, but it's not going to do any good. The broken public school system, shitty parents, and society's buy-in to the every-kid-gets-a-trophy mentality have created a couple generations of entitled, lazy kids who think they can say and do what they please and still succeed. If your college bends over to accommodate them (as most do), then you'll just have to deal with it or find a school with higher standards.

It's all about the money -- why kick an underperforming kid out when you can just keep taking his money? Schools aren't really worried about diluting their brand by letting shitty students graduate because every other school does the same thing, and families will still keep pumping in the tuition payments anyway.

College has ceased to be about learning; it's about testing your ability to identify what you need to do to get by, and putting up with this kind of bullshit for four or more years. You do what you're told, and you get the paper to prove it. That's what employers like to see. The lazy bums in your class have already realized this, and you're just late to the game.

If you want to actually learn something, go to grad school or get cozy with a professor who wants a research assistant. The Master's degree is the new Bachelor's.

I know you are trying to talk up how you felt that you could do the bare minimum to achieve your goal of getting an A and that is all that mattered to you. However you also essentially admitted that your goal of being in school wasn't to actually truly educate yourself.

I don't think that is anything to brag about.

Learning isn't just about getting the A or doing the bare minimum to get a piece of paper. You, in all probability, lost many opportunities to learn something. Just because an item is not to be an exam or homework assignment doesn't mean it's worthless to know. Congratulations on getting an A, but based on what you described above I would tend not to call you educated.

Eh If I miss one class it's very rarely half a week, and if it is well its an easy class to begin with at all of 2 credits.
Oh yeah and the people I know paying for it themselves are often the ones partying the most. :p

Which raises a completely seperate issue: How many lazy, useless people are ignoring college entirely and just wandering around aimlessly? If they arent causing problems, I dont care. But I suspect they might be draining on my tax dollars either now, or in a few years.

I'm on unemployment and posting on ATOT right now...

Wow, I'm going to start demanding all posts be written in broadcast style. Too much to read!!

Anyway, I know I'm not one of those students. I've been busting my balls eight or more hours a day, seven days a week. I'm a journalism student so if I miss a deadline, I loose credibility. Can't afford to. Fortunately I do work on my computer today so I can sneak some AT in to keep me from going completely crazy! :D

Always in the front of class too.

self-righteous bastards

wait, that's me. well, the last part at least.

Heh-heh...me too. Always in the front row...as close to center as possible, and almost always had something to say...:p

Graduated from the community college with a 3.94 however...(dammed typing instructor gave me a B because I have poor tehcniqwe.

Shorty...long rant...most of it highly accurate.

I stopped by the office of one of my accounting professors this morning to chat with him. (also picking up a letter of recommend for a job I'm applying for)

One of his students came in to whine that his printer crapped out last night and he couldn't print the assignment due at 8 am. The assignment was handed out 3 months ago...Unfortunately for him, the campus library and labs don't open until 8...and this professor refuses to accept any late assignments.

The professor said he wishes he had more students like I was...assignments always done right and turned in on time...and are actually in the class to learn something...not because mommy & daddy told them to go to school or get a job.
