I don't know the guy well, but we know each other by name, are friends on FB and I see him out all the time. He had a gf for a long time and they had a kid together. They split up, and she got married, moved to Georgia, and took the kid. Well she got divorced, and recently moved back to town so the kid could be with his dad, etc. etc. I had seen them out together recently and they seemed happy.

Then this happened yesterday

http://www.bnd.com/2012/03/22/2110836/coroner-releases-name-of-4-year.html

Mindy was driving and talking on her cell phone, got distracted for just long enough to swerve into oncoming traffic, hit someone head on, the car to burst into flames, her 4 year old son get burned up in the car, and her get life threating injuries. She's still in a coma, has had both of her legs amputated, and has yet to find out the accident killed her 4yo son in just about the most hellish way. (die in fire = hell imho) The guy finally gets his kid back just months before and then this. He's like the nicest guy too.

I've been cellphone free for a couple months now. Only wished I had it twice... and every day when I go take a shit so I have something to do in the stall.

Don't ever have children if you can't be comitted for life.

"Oh but, you don't know if he/she's the right one until you live with them..."
"I'll just poke everything and let the bitch deal with it..."
"Yeah he/she was the one when I first laid eyes on him/her..."

Douchebags.

Mindy was actually really good to her son, at least from what I've heard and been told. And she did have him properly in his car seat, in the backseat, buckled up.. She just fucked up and made a terrible driving mistake.

I fail to see how this is the fault of the cellphone.

The mother was a bad driver. PERIOD.

While I wouldn't wish this on anyone, the cellphone is not the root cause of the accident.

WTF are you talking about? None of your "quotes" have anything to do with what has transpired.

This. I am not an idiot that can't drive and talk on the phone.

I do not have anything nice to say about the girl.

However, I feel for the kid, the father, and the people in the car she hit head on.

You want to hear some crazy sort of logic? My brother was riding in the car with his (now ex) girlfriend, and he was messing around with her cell phone. She ends up getting into an accident, and he tells me something along the lines of, "I hate cell phones... if I wasn't messing with her phone, I might have been able to warn her about her mistake!"

This emoticon pretty much sums up my entire response to that: o_O

The best part is, he has one now, and he scares the shit out of me with it. We were traveling up to New York, and he's sitting there reading texts from a mutual friend (going to said friend's wedding) and responding... while driving. I'm not one to get scared over the way people drive, but sweet baby Jesus, I was fearin' for my life at some points.

Another good part was when he told me that he didn't want me to drive after a two hour stint, because my driving was "too scary". :p

EDIT:

Note that none of my driving involved a cell phone. Although, if I know I can swap lanes and get into a small space in between two cars (not a guess, but know "hey, there's enough room"), I'll do it. This tends to freak people out because they just see "tight space!" and don't realize that I've already judged the distance and determined that it's fine.

Reading while driving shows an immense lack of common sense. However, it is again not the cellphone's fault. It could just as easily have been a newspaper.

Blame where blame is due, people.

I agree. It's not like the messages are "sexts" or anything like that, so just have another person in the vehicle handle it. You can still easily tell them what you would like to respond with, and not continually pass over the rumble strips. :p

This is a tragic story.

Everyday I see people behind the wheel yakking away but appearing to be in control. Occasionally I notice a female talking in PTT mode and holding the phone flat-handed like a precious artifact and carefully keeping it in front of her face as she looks around before turning onto a busy street. It's totally ridiculous.

Some people will never learn.

Maybe we need a website with a wall of faces for all the victims of driving with a cellphone. With photos, ages, details of the accidents. Then to pass a driving exam you must display some knowledge of that site and its contents.

We should ask them a simple question as well, do you want to be added to the wall?

Sure as hell better fault her. She choose to place driving second to something else. This is the direct consequence.

Because stuff like this has stopped people from driving drunk.
