Text driving is about the same as drunk driving. you are a selfish son-of a bitch. I have no issue with either. I have a big problem when doing it while driving? What kind of asshole has to text while driving? NOTHING is that damn important.

I have no sympathy for her. To bad her son is hurt and the family she hit is hurt.

driving tired is worse than drunk driving. no one here has driven with little sleep before?

everyone posting in this thread lives in a glass house and don't fucking act like you don't. it doesn't make it right, no, but there should be a bit of sympathy because everyone does stupid stuff. this thread, if anything, shouldn't be about damning mindy, but helping open your eyes to some of the stupid shit you do in your own lives and not doing it anymore, whether it be texting and driving, driving buzzed, speeding too much, doing too many drugs, etc...

QFT, people want to bitch about those doing things they wish they could do, but that the person they are complaining about regretted.

she was texting to see if her sister wanted her to pick up her son and drop him off at daycare... it wasn't a social life thing. also, it was early in the morning and no other cars were around to watch what happened, except the one she hit.

i'm not excusing what she did or making excuses for her. what i'm saying, though, is that a lot of times, you guys can be extremely black and white about things regardless of the fact that you, your best friends, and your family members probably do the same thing. if the same thing happened to them, i'm sure you wouldn't sit back and call them "selfish to the core" or anything like that (unless you know they actually are).

i'm not defending her actions. i'm defending her character. her actions don't define her character. did she do something stupid, reckless, and negligent? yes. is that the kind of person she is? no. did she deserve any of this? no.

that's all i'm trying to say.

Sure, I'll accept that...and my post wasn't necessarily directed at you. I made no judgement against her character...only about her poor decision making and judgement.

Whatever the reasons for the text message, it should have either been handled in a way that did not require taking eyes off the road (phone call) or it should have been handled before they got in the car.

While I do believe that TALKING and driving is something that all people should be capable of doing before they are given license to driving a car, reading or typing or writing while driving is simply not smart.

As I said in my first post in this thread, I wouldn't wish this outcome on anyone. I appologize for the derisive tone in my previous comment.

you are inviting a world of invasion.

Dude on a road with no one for miles ahead of him...glances at his map. Trooper sees this and generates some revenue.

Please think it out ahead of time, unless you are for a police state.

What kind of map? The big folding map that no one can ever refold properly or a little printed map or a map on a dash-mounted GPS?

Very big difference.

No one should try to read a folding map while driving, even if no one is around. But, if you want to be stupid and risk wrecking your car and yourself, be my guest.

A small printed map on a piece of paper or a GPS? Those can both be held such that one could view both that and the road.

Alternatively, if you're lost, pull the fuck over.

texting and driving fatalities don't rank anywhere near drunk driving. They are not nearly the same thing. there's been so much bullshit propaganda about this in the past couple years.

to be honest, i'm just finding it hard to believe that this was caused by texting and driving. i mean, it's a straight road she was on... i don't see how someone can veer over into the next lane from texting on a straight shot, unless it's the first time they've ever texted and drove. i'm wondering if she dropped something and tried to pick it up and while she was driving... or maybe she leaned back to pick something up for her son...

the reason they think she was texting and driving wasn't because they found a half-completed text on her phone or anything, but because they subpoenaed her phone records and saw that she had sent text messages around the time of the crash. to me, that's not too clear cut and dry.

we won't find out for sure until she's able to remember and speak.

it wouldn't surpise me. you take your eyes off the road to read/type things happen. even on straight roads.

you are right driving tired is just as bad. i think its insane that people drive drunk, text/read while driving and drive exhausted. While Drunk driving is a far worse thing and people that do it should be bitch slapped and not driving i do considered the others bad and something a person shouldn't do.

I have pulled over and taken a nap once. i used to go to school in Rochester so i drove from IL to NY. once i thought i could get in another 100 miles and to the next motel. nope but i pulled over into a gas station and slept. not worth a accident.

i should also state i was hit by a idiotic driver as a kid. he blew a red light and nailed me. i spent a while in the hospital and missed half my freshmen year of high school from it..so i am a very cautious driver.

I respect this post very much.

I used to text and drive a lot. On a straight away, it was never an issue. Only when there was a slight bend was whenever I would hit the rumble strips on the shoulder and correct my line. Most people text quickly enough and high enough so they can glance at traffic in front of them periodically to know when it's safe to text and when it isn't. I just don't see someone thinking, "Oncoming big truck? Fuck it."... especially if they tend to veer when they are texting and driving. Maybe she reacted to an animal jumping out on front of her...

The most dangerous thing Ive done driving was driving sleepy. Worse than drunk driving, worse than texting and driving. Ive fallen asleep and hit the center divider twice. Second time took off my side mirror.

Most people suck at driving. If you scored below 90% on the driving exam you shouldn't be able to drive.

Stupid. I'll never understand why people like them have to use their cellphone and make a call while driving. Go and park if/when you do that. Sad that an innocent kid died because of this. 1 split second when your attention is distracted and wham....

So you are saying girls shouldn't be allowed to drive anything over 5,000lbs?

Never mentioned in my post about boys/girls in particular. This kid is dead because of this stupid mistake. Regardless, driving and texting never mixed. :(

None of this is about phone calls. It's about texting. WIth the proper handsfree devices talking on a cellphone is no different than to a passenger.

However you have asshats that insist on not only not using handsfee, but using their speakerphone and holding the phone in front of their face.

Personally I am willing to bet you'd have more accidents with texting than someone at a .08/.10 BAL

Or, maybe, if you need to look left/right, you take your phone away from your ear while you do so.

You need to be aware of your surroundings at all times, not just when you need to look one direction when making turns. Put the phone down. Is speaker so bad?

10:30 am and there were at least 3 witnesses according to the linked article.

and social or not, if someone texts me while i'm driving i don't even read it. i either call them back or wait until i'm off the road.

sad what happened.

Terrible... RIP.

Definitely a good PSA.. Although most of us smart ones do not text or talk on the phone and drive. I have hands free in my car should I get a call while on the road.

That's why I posted this as a "PSA".. It was just a friendly reminder that something as simple as texting while driving, as innocent as it may seem, can have terrible consequences.

Same old retard arguments.

Drunk driving == bad
Texting while driving == bad
Looking at a map while driving == bad
Trying to pickup your coffee mug that tipped over while driving == bad

Pay attention to the god damned road. Driving is a privilege, not a right.
