I see a market for a database company tracking sales tax rates and linking them to zip codes.

I'm assuming this will get eaten up by Paypal or some other large internet company. Man I miss the days of easy money online

Let's be fair - they have LOST tax dollars, and at a time when population is still rising (slowly), services and whatnot cost more, and a demand for even more from the government.


Would I love for government to scale back, as opposed to expanding and providing even more services and safety nets? Absolutely. A leaner, more cost efficient government, done correctly, should very well result in a stronger economy and better living conditions in time (perhaps with a momentary drop because the economy will lag behind government decisions like that, typically by a decade or two).
But that's not the end-point for this - this is about ensuring the states get next year in taxes what they got last year, and hell, get next year what they got a decade ago.
Some states will see minimal change, because the largest online retailers already collect tax in their state (or, for states without tax, then it's all a moot point anyhow).

I hate sales tax as much as most other people - but Ohio has done pretty well, all things considered, so it seems to be going to a decent cause. And it's money that would (should) have went to the state anyhow, so as much I'll dislike paying tax online, if shipping is cheaper/faster I will accept it as a necessary evil.

Err, Social Security hasn't actually benefited anyone, just dragged the economy down with tax burden and unfunded liabilities. Labor organization has also done more harm than good in the past few decades, driving the US auto industry into bankruptcy.

I have to admire the real reason Amazon supports this. Its because they're launching a tax collecting service for etailers for a fee of course. Which was really a brilliant move once they realized online sales tax was unavoidable.

Why would you point out things that were put in place before half this board was born? They've steadily went downhill over time and it's pretty much a given Social Security is just a money sink these days for anyone not already retired.

Like I said, last 10 years. Things are not like they were in the 50's. Hi guys, did you know they banned slavery? And I think women can vote now.

I eouldnt mind paying taxes if I could be reasonably confident that the money would go to something useful like parks or killing criminals or something. But you know most of the money is going to go to some politicians cousin to build million dollar bus stops and to some DMV administrator's six figure pension at age 40.

Why on Earth am I the only one who has been screaming for years that the argument shouldn't even single out online purchases? It should be ALL out of state mail-orders, whether phoned in after seeing seeing an infomercial/home shopping cable channel or requested by mail from a catalog/TV commercial/print advertisement.

By treating the Internet differently, we invited this. The Internet is just another way to provide enhanced mail-order services. Not every website has real-time inventory and the like. Sometimes it's no different than a Fingerhut catalog except you don't have to call or mail in a card. What if we used email to send in our orders?

It'll be funny to see a work-around with Amazon and others allowing you to generate a cart ID or something after shopping and then just calling it in to finalize it.

If this law truly does cover all mail-order shopping, this thread title and every article I've read has done a poor job of communicating that and it makes the problem worse by further differentiating online sales.

Actually, the government does that very well generally, when it's actually running something. For example, take a look at the massive social security program - it has very low overhead and it's estimated that if it were privatized, the overhead to running it would INCREASE several times.

Now, government has waste - when we DON'T have the citizens represented, like the military weapons and financial sector policies. But that's not what gets cut first.

Try to calm down. Link me to any DMV administrator with a six-figure pention at 40.

Now, there ARE anecdotal terrible abuses, but they're like under one percent of cases.
