American is a different dialect as we keep seeing on here, the fact that so many words mean completely different things or we have different words all together.

True.

Given that our respective branches separated hundreds of years ago, and that the Dialects we each use are *VERY* different from the language as it was then.....

I see it this way:

English (Language)
|
UK (Dialect) - American (Dialect) - Australian (Dialect)

I don't. We speak English, you speak American.

I'm English. You're American, deal with it.

Ah: You lost your argument, so you're going to fall back on personal Dogma.

Thanks for continuing to be the Wanker we all know and (dis)love. At least we get a consistent example.

If somoene can just kill the Geico lizard so I don't have hear/see those commercials every 10 minutes, I would be happy...

guess the term 'over-saturation' has never registered with them...

IIRC, in one of the Geico commercials the Gecko specifically states he is not British after someone says he is British sounding. I think his accent is supposed to be a running mystery gag.

There is no denying the over saturation however, but it must be worth the expense. Nothing sells like a cute animal.

Hal, English is a generic term. It's completely valid to state that I speak English and you speak English. This doesn't describe the dialect that we speak in though. You brought up Spanish, and the same example applies to Spanish as well. If I tell you I met a guy that spoke Spanish, that does not imply that he speaks the same Spanish that they speak in Spain.

Good Lord!

Some rum cove appears to have vomited on your scones!

You should send the dogs after the cad. then give him a damn good horsewhipping.

*adjusts monacle and stalks off to molest the serving wenches *

Haha. :) It can actually be good depending on what you make the "topping" out of it. A friend of mine gave me a recipe once for chicken and biscuits once, and it's interesting because the only "chicken" in it was a can of cream of chicken. It also had heavy cream and sour cream as well as sausage. It's tasty, but that much dairy wreaks havoc on my digestive system!

Of course it is, but my point is when you make it more specific you speak American English and I speak default, standard, no variation English, or if you feel so inclined English English.

Agreed.

This is why the UK version of Top Gear rocks and the American version sucks :)

No doubt that currently the UK version of Top Gear is superior. I still wish they would have aired the UK Top Gear instead of rolling their own.

However, we should remember that the UK crew is on their what? 15th season? I still hold hope that the US version will improve. I have read numerous comments from those in the UK that it took several seasons for them to get their formula down.

I just wish Comcast would broadcast BBC America in HD, along with NatGeo Wild. D:

Yeah I'd say the first series wasn't great, the second one was OK, the third was where it really started to kick off.

I think the oddity of the first few seasons of Top Gear wasn't because of the presenters or anything like that, but rather they were, in essence, treading new ground. The original Top Gear show, which ended 2 years prior, was a bit more serious and fairly car-focused compared to the current Top Gear which is three blokes cocking about. However, if you watch season 1, you'll still see some of the serious stuff such as Dawe's used car deals.

Of course it is, but my point is when you make it more specific you speak American English and I speak default, standard, no variation English, or if you feel so inclined English English.

I think your English is pish-posh, good sir! I only speak in Old English!

I agree, then they didn't have May for series 1 so it took them a series to get used to him then they were off.
