If there are a lot of Americans on UK commericals, it is probably because they ran out of the few beautiful people in the UK long ago, so they had to import US talent. 😛 And HAL wouldn't want to admit to any American presence, he can't stand America.

We have more genetic diversity in the US, which I read recently directly leads to a higher beauty quotient or something along those lines.

Used to be that the bad guys were usually black. That became a problem for obvious reasons, so the British would be next on that list.

then how do you explain Scandinavian (including icelandic) women? ...

where's your genitically diverse god now?

This is why the UK version of Top Gear rocks and the American version sucks 🙂

the uk version rocks because the personalities on it are entertaining.

the american version sucks because the personalities on it arent.

it has little to do with accent.

In the eye of the beholder; I like women that are shorter and have black hair.

god american top gear sucks.

I'm watching it now and it's AWESOME!

... Awefull... but awesome.

What a disgusting POS bastardization of a thing I love... I know how Brits feel about all of the US now.

I've been to the US, everyone there was > 200 lbs. That's not what I would call a beautiful people.

the only time i seem to recall americans on UK ads was in some shampoo commercial and the voice was dubbed to hide their accent. andie macdowell?

Yes most likely andie, oddly enough she looks better now than 20 some odd years ago when she debuted on that Sex, Lies and Videotape god awful movie.

I love America, but there just aren't "crap loads" of American people in UK adverts, there are some, and U.S. celebrities make it over here for bigger things, but when it comes to advertising the little stuff (i.e. most of the adverts) It's all English people, also it's often Scottish people and and Irish people as people like their accents.

I don't get pissed like that simply hearing their accent, that does not bother me in the least. We all have our accents. But what does get to me is when they deride US English as being oafish or inferior, or not "real English". Seems like a cheap shot, and they forget that the languages forked several hundred years ago, with several ethnicities adding their touches during the mass immigration days to form the version of English we speak today. Back when an immigrant would learn English that is.

I don't make the argument that your language / pronunciation is inferior, just that it's not English, it's American.

??? um, why?

it's very attractive sounding, not annoying whatsoever.

yes, there are. they're called american celebrities.

you're wrong, sir, on all counts.

i had a british professor in college and thought it was cool at first.
after 15 minutes, i was looking for the sharpest object to stab my ears out.

Hmm, that is a conundrum, and there is no denying the Scandinavian women. I recall a party at the University of Washington with a student from Sweden. Her personality and beauty was unreal. No pretentiousness, here in the US she probably would have been a stuck up bitch.

As for the bolded, are you saying a genetically pure society leads to more "beauty"? My original comment was a little tongue in cheek, but lets see where this goes. And that data/report I mentioned was real.

Actually, Budapest had the most amazing women, and in concentration, that I recall.

The British accents that appear in US commercials from what I have seen, appear to be used in a vain attempt to provide legitimacy for cheap/shady products. I am trying to recall the guys name who is always hawking stuff that is followed buy the ubiquitous "But wait! We're not done! Buy one, and get the second one free!!! Just pay separate shipping and handling!*"

* which is usually an outrageous price.

I'm not sure, it just seems (to some people NOT ME) that it's loud obnoxious and a little bit stupid. I think it's something about us being a little bit snobby and when an American comes over and calls an Aeroplane an "Airplane" a lot of people roll their eyes.

Yep, definitely, on late night tele-sales channels, with cheap crap products it's often an American voice you hear, on adverts on the BBC it's always an English voice, on ITV it's generally a UK voice for products, unless it's an advert of an American product or show, the same with Channel 4 etc.

Actually Obama sounds pretty good. Palin sucks.

It was a lot worse when Bush was President, we had a couple of Americans in a pub I go in regularly around then, but luckily they just came over to us and apologised for Bush! Ha.

That's where you're wrong, Charlie 😉

Bush always sounded funny. Obama at least reads his speeches the night before. Bush sounds like he just read the thing 10 minutes ago, didn't have enough time to ask what some of the points meant, so he would wing it.
