Mitt is bulletproof in Utah. He's not up for re-election until 2024. Mormons aren't exactly crazy about Trump in the first place. This message wasn't for him.
 
After all is said and done Trump will more than likely be acquitted and the Repubs will have nine months to brace themselves for the backlash that's going to hit them hard, gambling that in the make believe world of Trump it will be able to withstand the retribution voters will lash them with for holding a sham trial that will be noted in the annals of history as one of the darkest hours our nation had experienced.

All the Repubs are doing now is delaying the inevitable confrontation with destiny that is awaiting Trump.

Trump's precious legacy is now stained for life and so are Barr's and Pompeo's. The corrosive stench they created up on the Hill will follow them to their graves.

But hey! A win is a win, right? /s

It's far worse than that, acquittal of Trump is a signal to both Trump and all future Presidents that you can abuse the power of the office of the President as long as there's no specific legal statute that you're tripping over. A team of lawyers will become normal for all Presidents from here on out, ensuring they have the maximum amount of power possible without running afoul of something that would be impeachment worthy.

There are legal statutes he's tripping over, a whole bunch of them in fact! They still don't care.

Serious question - applying Trump's theory of presidential powers what precisely was wrong with his campaign colluding with the Russians and the Russians hacking the DNC? If in 2020 the Russians publicly said they were going to hack Trump's Democratic opponent and give the data to Trump I see how the US might go after the Russians for that, but as far as I can tell by the arguments put forth here Trump accepting the hacked data and using it to win the election would be legal and non-impeachable.

I don't think running foul of a specific legal statute would matter any more either. After this trial the precedent that will have been set is that a President can't even be investigated unless they willingly cooperate. By claiming absolute immunity, and abusing 'executive privilege' they can keep it tied up in court for years. When the Senate gets away with this they will have removed their ability to be a balance on the President. I know that Republicans think that they are going to get a few court cases after this is all over limiting the abuse of executive privilege and absolute immunity, but any smart President from now on will find some new excuse, no matter how flimsy, on why those court rulings don't apply in this case and require it to be retried, and there is nothing Congress can do about it.

The Russians can just put the hacked data into the public domain like in 2016. Anybody can do whatever they want with it.
 
The thing is, the GOP clearly doesn't care about precedent *at all*. I fully expect them to suddenly rediscover their commitment to executive oversite next time there's a Democratic president. Their hypocrisy simply won't matter to them. So far as they and their core base will be concerned, they will *always* have been at war with Eastasia.

That's not my question though, my question is under their current theory of law it seems there is nothing illegal about them actively and publicly accepting it.

ie: according to Trump the Mueller investigation wouldn't have found anything wrong even if it had concluded that Trump's campaign had been actively working with the Russians.

The Russians protect Trump from his own arrogance & stupidity. When they have something to help him, they do it themselves or just put it in front of his nose. Direct contact is not required.
 
It's just really abundantly clear that the only thing Dresh stands for is Dersh and his own self promotion. He'd say whatever it takes to get on TV and on the Senate floor no matter how insane. It is not so mysterious why he and Trump get along so well, they're truly kindred sprits

The precedents they are setting are incredibly dangerous. Essentially they think a president can basically openly ask other countries to help him or his party win re-election through whatever means they have because that is in the "national interest". It basically opens the door to rampant corruption of our voting process. No more secret meetings with russia. Just have them come to the white house and hold press conferences about their plans.

They went from no collusion to collusion is perfectly fine. I hope the next democratic president uses his power of office to drum up fake political investigations of every one of these idiots and drum them out of office. See how they like it.

The fix is in. Trump will be “acquitted” by Friday night. There aren’t any McCains left in the GOP to force witnesses/documents in the trial.

The real question now is does America wake up, digest what just happened in this sham trial, and demand change at the polls? Or do we continue on our oblivious path towards self-destruction? I think y’all can tell from my general tone and demeanor these last few months that I’m not holding my breath for salvation in the election. I’d assume at least 70% of the country hasn’t watched more than 10 minutes of the House proceedings or Senate trial, despite what the polls lead you to believe.

I’m already working on Canadian citizenship for my daughter and renewed my passport in case we need to leave. Of course, if it does come to that, I’m not sure Canada would last long against a failed America or stay neutral during a civil war. But it’s an exit strategy at least.

The Russians don't really play into Trump's blunder wrt Ukraine. Yeh, sure, under Trump's theory of operation he could openly farm out campaign messaging to the FSB but they're smarter than he is.

What Dersh & the rest are doing is putting out so much bullshit that people won't know what to believe so they'll go with their gut. The base believes in Trump. It feels good in some perverse way that's indescribable. That's their version of truth, independent of facts.

If Trump can do what ever he believes is best for the country which is him leading it, and is allowed to use foreign governments to help make that happen, what's to stop him from altering or removing our voting rights? The very fact that they believe he can do what ever he wants, even election interference on the premise that the best thing for our country is him leading it, 1) on some level invalidates our voting process, 2) is one of the premises or a building block of a dictatorship.

Yes, using his logic what's to prevent him from say, transferring funds from military construction projects into his campaign's ad budget?

That's a serious question, I can't see how that would be considered an impeachable offense.
