PSA: Neti Pots can lead to primary amebic meningoencephalitis D:

When used with tap water from some sources it seems.

That's the incredibly rare infection whereby parasitic amoebas enter the brain and start feasting on neurons. Encephalitis and death almost always follows. This is the same thing that killed that girl a while back who swam in a warm lake. Interesting that insufflated tap water can lead to this as well.

I'd only vaguely heard of the concept of Neti Pots before this.

They actually give me lots of seasonal allergy relief. Will read when I get home.

It's still incredibly rare. They recommend you use distilled water instead of tap water. Also of course that you keep the neti pot really clean and let it completely dry.

fack! just reading that makes me shudder. i do NOT like the idea of things living off of me or growing inside of me!

lol to which part? Neti is a form of Yoga and Yoga done wrong can be dangerous so lol right back at you

No it's just that the danger in this case is so far outside the bounds of "doing it right or wrong" that I don't see it applying. I agree that Yoga, especially the physical exercises, can be dangerous if done wrong. But this is a case of a completely unexpected outside influence. If it was the water itself doing brain damage I'd agree with you but amebic encephalitis kind of falls outside the range of things that anyone could expect would go wrong.

Some snuffers use them to clean out the nose. I never have, but have been mildly interested in it. Boiling water is easy enough to do.

Wait this was done without adding salt packets right?

I add these salt packets when I apply. I would assume salt rapes amoebas right>?

Boiling water up teh nose FTW! D:

I think he meant to boil the water, then let it cool first. Boiling kills anything in the water. Though, it could potentially absorb some metals, chemicals, or other residue from the container you used to boil it. 😛

I wouldn't assume that. I don't know about this particular critter, but many can live in salt water. Boiling, or buying distilled is cheap, and virtually error proof.

that's why i use
