Wow! Mars Rover Landing Spotted by Orbiting Spacecraft

Was going to call bullshit, no way, but then saw the source. Crazy.

And what have you Personally done for space exploration? Watching star wars doesn't count btw...*crickets *

Exactly, now stfu proud boy. Internet tough guy, make sure to wipe the chip grease of your keyboard before you go catch the short bus to school.

If he pays his taxes, he helps fund the exploration. And CSA provided the spectrometer, and you probably pay your taxes. There, now both of you can be happy.

It was a major accomplishment for everyone involved. I will admit I found the press conference a little off putting when everyone in NASA showed up to give a high five, but I don't blame them for being happy. They seemed to make it a point to say this was a US feat that couldn't be matched, except for the last guy. I wonder if that was mandated from the white house.

Its too bad they couldn't use Odyssey to record the 7 mins of terror. Just some sort of visual record for the lay person. Maybe even play the 7 minutes animations and have the actual confirmations read live. For such a simple presentation, it was actually fairly suspenseful. Especially when the guy running the landing asked for confirmation on a number and they were like...no. Talk about a holy crap moment, and I didn't even understand what was going on, just when the dude asks for a confirmation he should get it!

Such a great day for NASA and everyone involved. Its too bad we aren't ready to send people. I hope I live to see it.

This is an outstanding achievement.

Imagine the chaos that would ensue if it finds evidence life existed. Some fucked up looking being that just fucks with our minds, like a jelly roll thing that just sucks in things. And everything is jelly based. Just rolling around, absorbing things.

Well, I guess we've pretty much thought of anything so theres now way we will be surprised.

Curiosity killed the cat. The last thing we need to do is poke around the Martian landscape and disturb some underground colony of Martians.

They talked about the "confirmation number" in the press conference last night. Apparently HE had seen it pop up on his screen, but it hadn't gotten to the other person yet. It arrived shortly thereafter. (lag?)

I think he does have a valid point...discussing it now in the euphoria of the successful landing isn't the best time to debate it though...

What about all the starving and under educated kids in the US? The aging infrastructure or other immediately tangible benefits to the citizens now? There are no right/wrong or easy answers....

There will always be starving and uneducated kids. There will always be yet another "more pressing" problem back at home.

If we postpone every scientific endeavor until we have all our domestic ducks in a row, they will only be postponed forever, never to have their unpredictable and often invaluable benefits exploited.

Yeah, apparently someone in another room was running simulations to make sure they were getting what they expected.

Speaking of the press conference. Anyone else surprised the guy didn't know the format of the images that were transmitted? On one hand I can see why he wasn't prepared to answer it because its somewhat of a trivial thing to ask, but I still expected him to know it. They don't treat their press conferences like landings.

Anyone know if they had a still/video camera underneath the Sky Crane?
That would have been awesome to watch if they did.

They had some kind of camera recording the descent. However they can't send that back until the mast is raised, since they need the high gain antenna for that.

This just blows my mind. I can't believe they landed it the way they did. I want my tax money to go NASA right now!

exactly. that is a huge underlying goal that doesnt get talked about much. this might be the greatest success since the moon landing. nasa is actually starting to feel sexy again, and if that takes hold then watch the funding pour in.

If only they could give NASA even 1% of the budget.

To think, they did all this for the cost of 2 B-2 Bombers. (Or about 1 if you take into account the entire program cost of the B-2)
