I thought this was another stellar, dark episode. I LOVED watching Pete get comeuppance after 4 seasons of being a complete dick to everyone. I don't know what was funnier, the fistfight with Lane or Handsome Hanson getting to third base with Pete's new girl in Driver's Ed.

you guys are missing the biggest "THAT'S HIM/HER!" realization (from a late Gen-X'er perspective)

Holy SHIT!

I use to watch that show all the time, and I saw her on Hawaii-Five-O -- she was hot.

And this entire time, I was thinking that <forgot his name> married a pretty hideous wife. She hot. Just not in 50s style + short hair.

Ken Cosgrove. I was just today talking to my colleagues at work about how his wife looks older than him on the show, but that actress is only 30. She looks older to me.

And Lanes's wife tried to have sex with J.D. on Scrubs:

she also had a thing for Hank Moody a la Californication.

just saw the episode. that was f'n great. I thought that Pete was going to try and get buff after some dude named Handsome took his spot. Then he gets his ass kicked by Lane. Lane, seriously?

so glad I stayed away from this thread until now. that was too good of a surprise to ruin.

also, I must be hard up if I start thinking that Peggy is looking better and better. Megan is still the top though.

Cynthia!

LOL that's her name.

^^ Hahah that scene had me cracking up as well. I was watching the show with my wife, and commented to her about how nobody could remember the chicks' name, then we both laughed when the name was finally said at the dinner table by Don's wife.

OK. So we're 5 episodes in, nearing the halfway point of the season, and here are my thoughts so far after a pretty significant escalation last Sunday:

1. Bert is more superfluous to the company than he's ever been, he might as well have left last season like we thought he did. I never really knew what he did around there anyway, but now he just sits in the lobby or meeting room and reads the paper.

2. Roger is almost in the same boat as Bert except he actually has an office and has value because he can still smooze clients. Other then that, losing Lucky Strike hurt him, he couldn't even hold on to Ponds which was gift-wrapped to him by Freddie. I can see Roger having another heart attack or maybe falling into depression before long, but with at least 2 more seasons to go I hope not.

3. It looks like my prayers about them bringing Sal back will not be answered. It was a pipedream anyway since the company is barely getting by so I didn't expect it, but since Lucky Strike is gone I thought it might be possible. Stan has his moments (few and far between) but he's no Sal.

4. I liked Betty when she was more involved with the show but her scenes were pretty boring, so I'm glad Megan has replaced her in screen time and I'm starting to like her character in general even though she's all but reformed Don.

5. Can't get enough of Pete. He's always been my favorite character but now he's practically holding the company together with his accounts and he knows it, so the swarminess will be in full force even after the Lane beatdown.

6. Would like to see more of Ken, he's by far the most down-to-earth of the bunch. Peggy has been curiously absent from most of the action so far as well aside from hiring Ginsberg and the Dawn scenes.

7. Don's obviously changed, I still can't decide if it will last but Peggy is right to be concerned about it effecting his work.

8. I wish Weiner would focus more on the creative work then character development. So far there's only been 1 pitch to a client this season, I want to see more clients in the office with ideas being thrown around.

Could probably get to 20 if I keep going but that's enough for now.

^ Has Don done anything "work wise" all season? In previous seasons, he was full of ideas, doing actual work between his flings, smoking, and drinking (or stealing credit for Peggy's work)... and actually being an asset to the company.

I haven't seen him do shit this season except for sleep, leave early, and sit around with that mopey furrowed brow look on his face.

Yeah.. he went to a Rolling Stones concert. 😛

But seriously, did he ever do work? He tasks the Creative staff to come up with ideas, sometimes giving them guidance, then cherry picks the best ones to pitch to potential clients (Peggy or others would pitch to clients they already had it seems). So I guess if he's able to sell the company to get new business in the door then that's the only actual work he needs to do. Really, none of the partners do much by way of work except the one who doesn't have his name on the door, Pete.

"She caught him with chewing gum on his pubis!"

"What? Did she just put it there and forget it?"

Days later and I still burst out laughing at Lane's line...

Pete was lucky it wasn't Lane's dad he had to fight cause he would've gotten caned...

I'm not lying, I thought it was some character's mom. She definitely looks old, especially compared to Ken.

My only real gripe is that there are too many characters and their development is getting really diluted.

I finally started watching Mad Men this season (5). The writing is absolutely incredible! I am going to start watching Season 1 tonight via netflix streaming tonight, and hopefully get through the next 3 seasons to catch up before I continuing watching anymore of season 5.

I have heard the first 3 seasons are generally considered the best, is this still the general consensus? Thanks

Depends who you ask. I thought it got better each season,
the only thing about the first 3 seasons compared to season 4 and beyond is that the company undergoes a pretty significant change,
so some would argue the way things use to be made the show better than how it is now. Kinda spoilerish but if you're already watching season 5 you might not care.

@IAteYourMother and BrokenVisage:

Thanks for the feedback. Last night I started on S1/01, streaming via laptop hdmi to my HDTV. Will be catching up ASAP!

I wouldn't say Season 4 is in any way inferior to the prior seasons, but I will say that thus far I have liked Season 5 better than 4. In any case I find the show just deliciously entertaining and probably (to me) the best hourlong drama ever broadcast.

I just made an odd kind of connection. Pete called Trudy "Tweety" in last Sunday's episode, and I thought it was funny that Don would often call Betty "Birdy". So many connections between the 2 even their wives pet names.
