They usually have those stickers with the numbers on them... they're pretty fast to just type in.

I agree with you on that... not necessarily ALL check usage. Just the check usage when they have to write EVERYTHING in at the check out. Pre-write most of the stuff so you pretty much just have to sign and write in the price.

OHH!!! I forgot, another gd thing of you doing the work for them. At shop rite they have scales and computers all throughout the fruit section and they make YOU weigh and print out the bar code to put on the bag so you can go through self checkout. Just another way for them to cut costs of paying cashiers.

That's crazy, they don't have that over here yet (I've never heard of Shop Rite either). I'm sure it'll be implemented soon.

It's not like grocery stores has huge profit margins. They have to find ways to cut costs to remain competitive.

"Also, it's a form of EXPRESS checkout, so don't bring your 50 fscking items. "

that isn't correct. the self-checkout lines in grocery stores are designed as full service check-outs, not for limited numbers of items. At least the ones I've seen/used.

LOL the gorcery store I go to because it is closest owns a lot of other Shop Rites in the area, and all have just recently been remodeled with everything you can think of, StarBuck's etc. I cannot even get in there on a Saturday at noon because of how packed. I usually go shopping around 1 or 2 in the morning because it is open 24 hours and no one is there. Plus I get deals on all the leftover food from the buffets and such.

When you use the self-checkout, you should get a sizeable discount...say 10-25%, since they're not paying a checker to do it for you...Just like the "discount grocery/warehouse" stores where you have to bag it yourself...generally, you're getting a BIG discount over a "regular full-service" grocery store...

HAHA. They do have huge margins, when you go at Walmart and look at same items that are often 10-30% less priced. Also, for example, corned beef that they sell $5/lb, they get for $1/lb.

They never had that at the ShopRite I worked at. And there were also no self-checkouts. The worst is the people that come to the express lines with 50 items, then there are those that b1tch about a 2 cent price difference, etc...

Good.
People always complain about Walmart working conditions; this solves that problem.
Besides, lower costs are better for the consumer :)

They need to put up rules for them:

12 items or less.
50 years or less.
No soccer moms.
No welfare recipients.

Things would go so much smoother.

I've never seen a self-checkout line that was designed for "regular" use, I've only seen them designed for "express" use (for those of you saying otherwise).

One time I was in a hurry, but had just about a full cart load of items. The lines at the regular cashier stations were huge, but there was one self-checkout station not being used at all, and no line for it. I went over there, and had my entire cart scanned, paid for, and was leaving, before the three people at the other self-checkout stations had their measly 4 or 5 items taken care of. <shrug>

No... grocery stores do not have huge profit margins. Walmart is able to sell for less because they use their size to bully their suppliers - they get better prices than your local supermarket. Your local supermarket doesn't have the leverage to get the prices Walmart does.

and no its not really a way to avoid paying cashiers, it helps shorten lines though. go to an albertsons or safeway at night. the safeway doesn't have self checkout in the bay area, so you end up in a hideous line with only one cashier open. at the albertsons the self checkout helps you zip out if you just need a bag of chips or whatever and not have to wait behind someones cart full of a weeks food.

People, the self-checkout was designed for two purposes: speed and simplicity. It's really not that hard to operate. In fact, you can checkout in easy steps.

1) Scan items by the bar code.
2) Place scanned items in a bag in the Bagging Area.
3) Insert cash, or select alternate payment method from the colored and labeled pictures.
4) Take items and leave.

If you can't figure it out, then go to a regular line and don't hold up everyone else.

Also, it's a form of EXPRESS checkout, so don't bring your 50 fscking items.

Agreed. If these people can't manage to figure the self-checkout out, just remember that these are the same people who are driving when you are out on the road.

"I've never seen a self-checkout line that was designed for "regular" use, I've only seen them designed for "express" use (for those of you saying otherwise). "

Kroger self-checkout station has a carousel arrangement with multiple bags, obviously designed for lots of items. Giant Eagle self-checkout lanes are exactly like any other check out lane there, long conveyor, multiple bag holders, also obviously designed for large numbers of items.

Any store that has express lanes marks them as express lanes, so the OP is incorrect to generalize about all self-checkout lanes being express.

Also, self-checkout doesn't exist for convenience of customers, it exists so stores can get rid of some of their employees. Same thing with self-serve gas stations.

I would really like to get rid of self checkout. In the ghetto, they got rid of them not because people couldn't figure it out, but because of theft.

I would like the following lines at the supermarket:
1.) 10 items or less, no checks
2.) WIC coupons/food stamps only (if you are using these, you must goto this lane)
3.) Credit/Debit lines
4.) Cash/credit/debit/check lines
