PSA:If you can't use the self-checkout properly, DON'T

People, the self-checkout was designed for two purposes: speed and simplicity. It's really not that hard to operate. In fact, you can checkout in easy steps.

1) Scan items by the bar code.
2) Place scanned items in a bag in the Bagging Area.
3) Insert cash, or select alternate payment method from the colored and labeled pictures.
4) Take items and leave.

If you can't figure it out, then go to a regular line and don't hold up everyone else.

Also, it's a form of EXPRESS checkout, so don't bring your 50 fscking items.

i agree, they should practice, but not at 5:30 pm when there are 20 people in line behind them.

A person's gotta shop when they can. 🙂

Just because you figured out how to use a self-checkout station doesn't make you special. Your time is not THAT valuable, get over it.

You're right, my time isn't THAT valuable. I'm simply voicing an opinion that I'm sure others have as well. Also, the part that annoys me the most is not necessarily the people who stand there dumbfounded trying to figure out how to pay, but the people who seem to ignore the "15 Items or Less" sign and bring an entire cart full of items and they're there for an hour.

Well I agree with the OP. And I find it funny that some people cant understand the machine. I love it when they just start jamming buttons and knocking things around cursing and all... its comedy.

And our time is valuable.

I like to go there with beer or wine. The light starts flashing and nothing moves untill someone comes and swipes their card.

I hate those who take their full cart to the self checkout line. Meanwhile there's a long line full of people just buying a couple of items. Why not just go to the regular line and have the nice cashier and the bagger take care of you?

I guess it depends on the store. Where I go shopping, there are always plenty of checkout lines open, including at least 4 self-scan checkouts. And they've usually got someone there to bag purchases at the self-scan. The self-scan is also set up to handle large orders. The bagging area is several feet from the scanner. A few shopping bags-worth of purchases can accumulate before the system needs the items to be bagged. This only holds up things when there is no employee there to bag the items as they are scanned.
So I guess this is a matter of how the self-scan checkout is set up. Some are set up for express checkout only, some aren't.

eh... they are pretty easy to use, but sometimes the machine will fvck up. Like when it keeps telling me to place the item in the bagging area when its already there, no matter how many times i remove it and put it back on.

This bothers me when people take a long time, but I do it myself sometimes because sometimes the bagging sensor is screwy, or the coupon thingy.

I have two things to say on this:

One: I hate how the supermarket it getting you to do their work by offering self checkout.

Two: I just watch the CSR punch in the PW code and memorize it when you have a problem with bagging or wanting to remove an item, so now I do not have to wait, I just do it myself.

Rather than blaming the patrons, blame the store. The only reason they have a self check is that it costs less than a cashier, weather or not it's faster for you was never even considered.

Eh... most of the time when I see someone have trouble with those things, it's because the system sucks, not the user. Especially those damn scales - if I have really light items at Home Depot I really have to debate between going through the long line at the ONE manned line or go through the self checkout. Although the last few times I've done it, it seemed to work better. My favorite was when I bought a gallon of paint and put it on the scale. It told me to take it off. Then it told me to put it back on. It just kept doing it over and over again.
