PSA: How to open a beer bottle without a bottle opener

So me & the gf are out of town on a mini-vacation of sorts and brought some of our Amstel (beer) that was on sale. Unfortunately being the plan-ahead people we are, didn't bring a bottle opener (non-twist off caps).

Being the resourceful internet geek that I am, I searched for "how to open a beer bottle without bottle opener." Found this video on YouTube, and now we are enjoying our beers 😀

Cheers!!

same here

I usually find a hard flat surface (corner of counter) and pull the bottle straight down with a good amount of weight while the cap is lifted off by the counter corner.

yeap. have had to do that a few times. but if you just look around you will find many places to open a bottle.

I learned that the first day I was in Denmark🙂

Another popular one is the lighter (a lot of Danes smoke so there's always a lighter floating around), a friend of mine used to do it with his iPod. I've also seen people do it with newspaper and other stuff.

My German friend who came to study abroad at my school showed us that technique, very fun to show off at parties.

And if it's your last two bottles, you can put the cap back on manually of the one you just opened and then use that one to open the one that hasn't been opened yet. Then you can usually just twist off the remaining one fairly easily.

It was also very useful when we were in Europe and picked up a few bottles to head out to an outdoor concert and didn't have access to an opener.

Worst part of it is... the b/f who is the stereotypical Pollack when it comes to drinking amnd knows every conceivable way to open a bottle... has been doing that for years and I was kinda phyched that I knew!!!

What keeps the beer from sloshing out when the cap comes off suddenly and the bottle moves downward quickly?

I can open it with a lighter.

My friend uses 2 liter bottles of coke to do it... makes the cap fly high in the air too... its cool.

Always carry a swiss army knife. I've been carrying a Victornox Backpacker/Cimber for 30 years. It's got beer opener, corkscrew, scissors, screwdrivers, etc.

I even got the same model for an ex-wife for her birthday, but she didn't understand how invaluable a tool like this can be.

On a more sordid note. I was overseas hanging out with an Austrailian who was describing sex shows in Thailand's Patpong District. He was saying that the shows were not what a normal person would find erotic. The girls would open beer bottles with their... I'll let you figure it out. Anyhow, the beer fizzed and his girlfriend got shot in the face and began crying. Ouch!

I remember seeing a friend do that once at a party back years ago, now I can try it out myself. For me, I usually just use a lighter applying same method as that of the video.

I tried that way after I read about it in Maxim, but I couldn't get it to work. I just use the edge of the counter if necessary.
