PSA: Eragon and Eldest

My 10yr old enjoyed both books. After the first few chapters, I believe that was the target demographic.

I loved the Pern series. Then again, I was in grade school at the time. From people's descriptions of Eragon, it sounds like I would have liked it at that time, too. Maybe not now, and i'll probably never read it since there are so many other books that come with better recommendations.

Partly because he originally was going to skip 5 years or so since the last book, since he finds it hard to write from the perspective of child characters. He got halfway through, decided it didn't work, and had to go rewrite everything. I don't know why the other book isn't out yet though. He's said that at most he's going 7 books, though he might try to stick to six. Originally it was going to be a trilogy, but he had more ideas and such that made him increase the size of the series, which explains why the stuff with the Others dropped down to glacial movement (no pun intended) since everything should have hit the fan by now.

Still, an excellent series. I'm mixed on Feast, but in general each book is better than the last. I also recommend chasing down his other books, especially Tuf Voyaging, and his short stories. They're printing a book with most of his short stories in the near future, but I can't remember what the title is off hand. It was originally called George R. R. Martin: A Rretrospective (NOT a spelling error) when they released it under a small press; now that they're reprinting it under a larger distributer, they changed the title for some blasted reason.

Eragon is utter garbage, like the movie. It's written by a 17 year old and it shows. I had to turn the movie off after 20 minutes I couldn't bear the endless cliches and pathetic script. If you're 10, then all right. But if you're 10, you should be reading Harry Potter.

Yeah, read GRRM. As for him splitting crows/dance up. It doesn't really make much sense. It's not like the threads are tied up for the characters in crows either. He really shoulda just wrote the entire book and then cut it in half. What makes even less sense is that if he had most of it done, how come he's taking so long to write Dance with Dragons? I think he's just stalling for time and he doesn't really know how to end it. The fame is getting to his head. I guess that's one problem of killing off every other person. Meanwhile, he has all this time to write other books and stuff.

If you want something quick and not utter garbage, read Feist's first set the riftwar saga. Ignore his other books like the plague.

He's also written a couple of ASoIAF stories set 100 years before the current series. They're called "The Hedge Knight" and "The Sworn Sword". THK was actually turned into a comic book miniseries and is available in trade paperback.

Just thought I'd pop in to say I just started reading Eragon last weekend. So far I'm liking it a lot. It's a very easy read and the pages just fly by. I don't have time to read very often so this book is great for me. I owe almost every Forgotten Realms and DragonLance book written up until a couple years ago and do notice a different but heck, he's 17 and it's his first book. Give him a break. I'm sure no one here can do better. 🙂

I got the first and second book for Christmas and will have to get the 3rd eventually I'm sure.

George RR Martin is my favorite author. You should read hedge knight to see what kind of style he writes.

I also like Robin Hobb and Orson SCott Card.

Is that the Thomas Covanent series? If so, I may have to reread because I didn't like it.

You should def give it another read. Song of Ice and Fire is very good as well... different series though. The Eragon/Eldest thing is the homeschooled kid who wished he was Tolkien and Lucas

thomas covenant isnt about the white gold weilder by donaldson is it ? christ i've read so many books in my life they all seem to jell after a while.
