PSA: Eragon and Eldest

I used to read a lot of fantasy books, but since marriage and kids my reading has been somewhat curtailed. A friend loaned me these two books and they are among the best fantasy books I have ever read. Even though the books are medium length (400+ pages), they are jam packed with action, excitement and a very robust storyline.

Where I thought the Wheel of Time seemed to drag out (both in the number of books and in the size of each book), this was definitely not a problem for Eragon or Eldest. If you like fantasy books and want a new series, you have to try this one.

PS - It is supposed to be a trilogy, but the third book hasn't been released yet.

Is that the Thomas Covanent series? If so, I may have to reread because I didn't like it.

Besides, I'm not saying it is the best series I have ever read, I am saying it is definitely up there so the thread isn't closed yet.

Eragon cannot compete with the shear grittiness of this series stated above. Song of Ice and Fire is by far my favorite fantasy series ever written.

George R R Martin.

Reading Eragon made me think that the author was a kid who played too many video games, and watched too many movies.

Oh wait...

I'm in the middle of A Feast For Crows. All of the books are excellent thus far, but man I don't dare get attached to any character, there really don't seem to be any happy endings for any of them.

I experienced the same feeling about 100 pages into the book, as well as 15 minutes into the movie, WHICH I SAW FOR FREE; a couple of friends dragged me along and bought me a ticket, only time I've ever felt ripped off after watching a free movie!

The movie was one of the worst I've seen in ages. So if the books are anything like the movie was, I know I'll hate it.

i can't say that a movie is any indication of how the book will be. usually movies compared to books suck because they leave a lot out.

Yeah, just in the wrong order.

Thrones is first, followed by Kings, Swords, and Crows

I've seen the movie and it completely sucks. Its also quite different than the book(s), which are generally considered to be entertaining enough to be worth reading.

I'm surprised the number of haters in te thread. The only thing I can figure is that I interrupted the wheel of time to read these and I'm not too enamored with wheel of time so in comparison Eragon and Eldest appear better than they really are.

I've been tempted to read these now I'm not sure.

The stories are fun, albeit predictable. It's the writing style that really turns me off to the books. Difficulty wise I'd say it's even easier than the Harry Potter books; I bought my 10 year old cousin Eragon and she liked it. I still haven't finished the first book because I just can't stand reading it.

Movie is supposed to be terrible, book is just meh. Pick up any of Tolkien's works - they're much better.

I think there is supposed to be two more before the series concludes, i'm personally holding off on reading them until they're all out.

didn't george martin say that feast for crows was so long that it was split in two? if that's really the case, then why has it taken 2 more years to finish up the second half?

Well I liked them too but I'm not a book snob 🙂. Sure you can tell they were written by and more for kids but they are entertaining and compared to a lot of the crap I read they were well written. Movie was one of the worst POS I've ever seen. I read through the whole Dragon Riders of Pern series last month and they are pretty good too at least at the start. They start getting repetitive after a while.
