I just put in the max price I'm willing to pay over buying it new from a retail store. I win some and I lose some.

Except 80% of the time you get some moron that will keep bidding more and more trying to beat you. If you put the max price willing to pay, you will run into that issue.

IE:
$5 item
You put in $100 proxy early
Joe Rtard comes in and goes hmm 10 dollars? Damn. Hmm 20 dollars? Damn! Hmm 35 dollars? Damn ....

or
$5 item
Joe Rtard comes in put bids 10 dollars. Yaay I'm winning! You snipe with 3 seconds with $100.


The latter strategy protects you from idiots that think you have to be the highest bidder the entire time to win. There is literally zero upside of proxy bidding early on compared to the same bid with a sniping system.
