I sign my work emails with titles I've earned in MMO's. Eg,

Supersexy McAwesome, Rider of the Maelstrom

In the US to get EIT you need to pass a test. It really only counts when applying for a job (and in some areas doesn't matter at all). But it certainly isn't as simple as checking a box and paying money.

PE and PLS are the two that matter. I don't know about where you are, but PE (and PLS) incur a ton of legal responsibility. Especially in Civil (I don't know about mech and elec except as they apply to buildings though). The test is a hell of alot more intense than ethics and law. It encompasses anything an engineer in that discipline might need to do (different disciplines, different PEs in some areas). Again, no idea where you are, but getting a PE is not easy as pie here.

I've also never heard of anyone bitching to the state liscensers about not getting their PE and getting it. At least where I am, everyone says to not appeal, its a waste of money.

"maybe LEED" means LEED only in places it applies, like when doing a LEED Certified project. People who plaster LEED all over everything when it is irrelevent do irritate me.

Okay, looks like we're governed by agencies with different philosophies. You only need to do technical exams if you didn't graduate from an "accredited" university engineering program.

Check mine out, if you feel like it. It's as simple as what I told you. I'm a civil and may be less than a year from a license, as long as I pass the ethics/law exam. I heard it's not hard if you bother studying. A bachelors and almost a master's later, I think I can do that... Personally, I would not trust me to stamp anything, and plan to keep it that way. But hey, my employer gives EITs a $10k pay bump, just for having one. Yay...

From my research, LEED is most useful for architects.

I would rather read about someone's titles and qualifications instead of about the hardware inside their computer. I have never understood why people put that crap in their sig. At least their qualifications have some remote bearing on whether I should pay any attention to their posts.

Somebody's decisions in computer hardware are much more revealing of their abilities and character than any IT certification.

My favorite is a guy around here that is a "Certified Ethical Hacker" ooooohhhh no not that. But at the bottom of all his emails he has a huge C|EH logo embedded.

a guy i used to work with had an ASCII cross and his initials in ASCII as his email signature in his personal email.

That is interesting. I now understand why there is no reciprocity with Canada. I had always thought it was just a nationalistic thing.

Here are the requirements for New Hampshire (where I will likely be getting my PE when the time comes)

Really? EIT? PE? LEED?

In my province:

EIT - All I needed to do was fill in the application and check a box on the application form. Oh, and pay the extra $75. You don't even need to be done your bachelors to apply, IIRC. So, you may as well just write ", BASc."

PE - So, you filled in the application, passed your BEng. or BASc. program with 60%, paid the $500+ in fees, and went to pass a 50% pass-rate exam concerning ethics and engineer related law. Then you sugarcoated enough experience and got 2 or 3 references to vouch for you. Now you're a PE and get your stamp! Even if you're completely incompetent... My workplace is filled with newer grads that are PE certified, and the biggest thing they've designed is a parking lot, surfed the other half of the time, and sugarcoated the rest.

LEED - Last I checked, there are over 150,000 whom are LEED certified, but only 10%-ish of those actually sign off on stuff and use their accreditation. Hell, I know one personally. She passed the old version of the test, writes "LEED AP" after her name, but doesn't work and hasn't worked in green anything, let alone signed off on a LEED project, etc. I won't even go into the green-washing that LEED is, the exorbitant fees they charge, etc. But I guess they listened and came up with a new scheme...

Edit: Oh ya, forgot about the other PE story. Rumour has it that one guy in my old office failed the PE exam a bunch of times, but appealed, and bitched enough that they gave it to him. He was stuck in the same job for almost 10 years, never got promoted, then snapped when he missed a promotion one last time... The entire office had a code word in case he ever came into the office with his duffle bag loaded with something unusually heavy. But, PE certified!

Ummmm...in the US, it's not easy getting your PE. EIT, however....yeah, just get your BS and take a test.

It appears so. I remember freaking out years ago that I'd fail the technical exams or something.

Looks like I need to do zippo where I am. Thought our standards would have been more similar... Lucky me then.

I'm embarrassed to admit this but I put CISSP in my work e-mail signature. It's nonsense but in government contracting land people eat that shit up. If you can't beat em then join em :-/
