Well like I said, I thought the toilet bowl cleaner was the detergent-based stuff, not an acid. At least, that's what was there a few months ago.

You're not going to even acknowledge the second half of my post, are you :D

Sarin gas?

or are you referring to how all those Japanese emo kids like to off themselves by burning charcoal in a small space (CO asphyxiation)?

Now you've done it. Homeland security will be knocking on the doors of everyone who has posted in this thread looking for terrorists making gas bombs. Good thing I don't live in the USA.

well, news to me. must be the one that didn't get the memo and chem class was really boring back in the day.

in comparison to mixing chlorox w/ ammonia (on accident) how does this compare? i know even when i clean my patio where my dogs piss, chlorox w/ the ammonia in dog pee it gets pretty nasty.

You also get a chemical reaction if you leave bleach in a toilet bowl and then urinate in it. Not sure what gas is produced but it smells strong and is irritating.

Having a girlfriend is nice for things like this. I can't remember the last toilet I cleaned.

I've experienced that a few times over the years due to idiot dish washers who combined chemicals.

I was on the second floor of Circus Circus where the monorail enters the building several years ago. I got a whiff of something familiar that burned my throat and did an immediate heads up to check the crowd around me. Sure enough, multiple people were coughing and reaching for their throats. I started herding people out of the area telling them there's a gas leak. I knew I didn't have time to explain what was really happening. I got all the people clear and management finally shows up pissed at me for chasing the guests away from the machines. I explained what I suspected happened and they grudgingly went to check. Turns out a janitor had mixed chemicals in a mop bucket and left it in the utility closet. They never said so much as a thank you and cautioned me to talk to management first next time. Yeah, right, I said there's not going to be a next time and left.

Doesn't matter, even the ammonia salt based stuff can form chlorine gas, which you did (not mustard gas, fyi, that's a little different). Moral of the story, don't mix bleach with ANYTHING, unless you like flaming clouds of death.

I didn't say ammonia based, I said detergent based (e.g. Duck Brand Toilet Bowl Cleaner).

There are only a million products on the market that mix bleach with a surfactant, alcohol, or detergent. Oh noes, millions of people poisoning themselves doing the laundry or dishes every day!

You made mustard gas... and didn't know what you were doing?
haha. I love how you said this without being sarcastic.

mustard gas
1,5-dichloro-3-thiapentane (picture on the top right)

Lysol toilet bowl cleaner
Hydrochloric acid
Alkyl (C12-C18) dimethyl benzyl ammonium chloride

Bleach is sodium hypochlorite. Adding acid to it creates hypochlorous acid. It's basically the same as sodium hypochlorite except it's a gas. Gases are bad.

In other news, a fun thing to do is mixing bleach with ammonia. It creates chloramine.

Glad you're okay, tcsenter! Now you'll have something to tell your grand kids about!! ;)

Where I used to work, they used gaseous chlorine for the pools, up until about 5 years ago. Man, did it suck when you had to change out cylinders! Even with the door open, and the exhaust fan kicked on, you were certain to get a little whiff of chlorine gas from one of the empties you were changing out!! D:

Almost as bad as that was when I worked in the nuclear power plants in the Navy, and we had to add ammonium hydrate to the primary reactor coolant system. That stuff was so volatile that they would chill it with ice for half an hour before the evolution, and the engineering lab technician would wear gloves, face shield and apron while pouring it into the chemical addition funnel. And even then, sometimes when he opened the cap on the bottle, you'd get some that would vaporize to gas......one whiff of that stuff would simply shut down your throat so you couldn't breathe, in or out!! Luckily, I only had to do that one a few times, and never missed not doing it!!

An acquaintance of mine from years ago did something similar in the military (in the 1970s), can't remember what he used to do, not sure if he ever told me in detail. But he basically inhaled some nasty gaseous shit that the military used to make people handle by hand with seriously inadequate protection and it severely damaged his lungs. Was in the hospital for months and had to use oxygen for the rest of his life. Worse, the military and US Gov fought him tooth and nail over disability, compensation, and health care claims, blaming his negligence for the accident. They settled eventually and he got a big payout but he only lived a couple more years.
