Update: GMG Responds
"Following a six-month dialogue with [CD Projekt RED] about the launch of The Witcher 3, we were disappointed that despite the offer of significant cash advances, and other opportunities to officially work together, (we even offered to fly to Poland to discuss in detail how we could and wanted to support this launch), CDPR chose not to engage with a number of significant, reputable, and successful retailers, including ourselves, as they instead focused on supporting their own platform GOG. " Sulyok said.

...

Sulyok explains that GMG chose to essentially go around CD Projekt RED by acquiring digital copies of the game from third parties and retailers that were approved by CD Projekt RED. According to Sulyok, this means that CD Projekt RED is getting the revenue from sales of these games, and that any additional discount is absorbed by GMG. Earlier today, CD Projekt RED told GameSpot it was getting "zero" revenue from these sales.

The blame game has started.

GMG was one of those sites for quite awhile which is why this is so weird.

Are you saying they were certified legit or they were grey market? I have seen no evidence to suggest GMG is a legit key reseller. And, this only brings to light they are likely grey market.

They were always touted as one of the legit sites, Steam, GMG and GOG were supposed to be the "safe" ones other then the publisher sites.

I have never heard of GMG being legit. There was lots of people that had their Battlefield keys revoked because they were gray market. Ubisoft did the same to some of their games being sold by them.

I have never had an issue with GMG and consider them quite legit. I have purchased about 30 games through them, including Ubisoft games.

Yea, GMG is highly regarded. I've purchased probably 50+ games from them with no issues. Even Techbargains likes them.

Edit From CDProjekt:

http://forums.cdprojektred.com/threads/35436-Witcher-3-35-off?p=1635264&viewfull=1#post1635264

Just a few words of explanation:

We have worked with GMG in the past for w2 and they were a legit partner.
We control all digital and the codes, and because we decided not to sell Keys to GMG it came as a suprise that they are doing a special promo without buying Keys from us. We have reach out to ask for the source of they Keys but up until now there was no response. They might sell nVidia Keys (which are not to be sold but gifted with the nVidia promo), or they just bough Keys from gog just like a regular customer and now they resell them with a loss (we cannot prevent anyone from selling something).

They also list Bandai Namco as the published which is not true for w3 (namco is our box distributor in PAL), so GMG is not a CDPR partner for W3 but they still might sell Keys that will work.

Same here. I've purchased many games from them that have activated on Steam with no problems. None of the keys have been revoked or disputed.

this is weird. So CD decided to push their own platform and the likes of steam and GMG went behind their back and bought up gray market keys and sold them? Kinda shady on GMG's part. Witcher 3 belongs to cdproject. They cant/should expect to do what they want if cdproject doesnt want to have them as a vendor.

Neither GMG nor CDProjekt have said they are gray market keys, though. Even CD said they believe GMG just bought them from GOG and are reselling them. That's not gray market.

I like GOG and CDP, but really guys? Just to push your own platform. That's not what the world needs.

That's not how I read it. They said they would buy them from gog and resell at a loss? No they wouldn't do that. They are a business not a charity.

This. Is the mom & pop shop around the corner from me that buys their product from Costco a grey market shop? No. They're a legit reseller that's sourcing their goods from an upstream (wholesale) retailer. CD Projekt is still making their fair share here.

They own the content. They should be allowed to decide how its distributed. If it comes out all those gmg keys are gray market and get banned on steam there will be hell to pay. People will pirate the game saying they already bought it but the revenue only went to gmg and whoever sold gmg the keys.

Im interested in seeing how this plays out.

Why not change the thread title to something more discussion oriented?
What should the title be?

CD Projekt stance is not to buy Witcher 3 from GMG.

A representative for CD Projekt Red tells GameSpot that Green Man Gaming's Witcher 3 codes are coming from an "unknown source." As such, none of the revenue from Green Man Gaming's current Witcher 3 promotion will go to GOG.com or CD Projekt Red. If you'd like to buy The Witcher 3 directly from CD Projekt Red, head to the game's GOG.com page here.
Writing in the CD Projekt Red forums, business development manager Rafał Jaki said fans of the company should not buy The Witcher 3 from Green Man Gaming."I would kindly ask our fans no to buy via GMG at this time. We had not sold them Keys and don't know the origin of them," he said.

I know that, but the fact remains that CD Projekt believes the keys are being bought legitimately just not through them.

Oh, and businesses sell things at a loss at times. They're called loss leaders.
