I once had a great deal of respect for you and your opinions, but sadly, that is no longer the case :(

Sorry man. I always keep real maple syrup on hand for various dishes and desserts, but when I eat pancakes/waffles I go ghetto. I guess it's hearkening back to my extremely poor childhood or something. :hmm:

Try the "dark amber" (or even grade B) maple syrups instead, you'll probably like them better than the lighter fancy syrups.

Oh... and there are places in Connecticut that make maple syrup that puts Vermont to shame. Don't buy into the hype!

Yeah, I've tried various kinds though can't say for certain I have tried that variety, but I've actually started using a mix of English golden syrup and maple to give me the proper flavour and texture on combo on my breakfast goods. The maple is just an organic from the local store, but it's decent.

By the way flavoured syrups are disgusting, for whomever brought them up earlier in the thread.

You see this in a lot of food though. Two of the most infamous lines I think you can find on food is "all natural" and "natural flavors." Unless it says where those flavors are coming from, those statements are pretty meaningless.

I go with what tastes better not what's all natural. The fake stuff tastes better than the natural stuff.

So true.
For example, "sugar" used to be anathema, now drinks are touted as "sweetened with natural cane sugar" in a glass bottle formed from natural silica! The worm has turned.

That's why I buy stuff that says "100% pure maple syrup" on it. It usually comes in a glass bottle shaped like a maple leaf.

I hardly ever eat pancakes, so I figure for the few times I make them, I might as well splurge on the good syrup.

Vt.: Log Cabin All Natural Syrup not the real deal

MONTPELIER, Vt. – A new Log Cabin syrup touted as "all natural" looks a lot like the pure, 100 percent maple product that's the pride of Vermont, right down to its packaging in a plastic beige jug.

But Vermont officials, seeking to protect the state's signature commodity, contend that Log Cabin All Natural Syrup is not what it seems, enticing consumers into dousing their pancakes with ingredients that include caramel color, xanthan gum — a natural thickener — and a paltry 4 percent maple.

They want the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to investigate whether Log Cabin Syrup, a division of Pinnacle Foods LLC, is violating FDA labeling laws.

"While most Vermonters have a discerning eye and palate for real maple syrup, the countless consumers outside of our state who have come to expect quality from natural Vermont products may be fooled by this misleading labeling," U.S. Rep. Peter Welch, D-Vt., said Wednesday in a letter to FDA commissioner Margaret Hamburg.

Michelle Weese, a spokeswoman for Mountain Lakes, N.J.-based Pinnacle Foods, said the company believes its Log Cabin All Natural syrup "complies with all FDA regulations."

The FDA said it does not have a definition for "natural."

This is NOT maple syrup. It's the same high fructose corn sugar crap as it has always been:

Where does it say maple on the bottle?

If you poke a maple tree, does it not bleed? If you put its blood on waffles, are they not delicious?

Lol, Log Cabin should market this as "cruelty free" syrup. :awe:

Fake syrup is disgusting. Whenever we go to my father-in-law's house, they almost always make pancakes for breakfast one day, and they always have the absolute worst crap for syrup.. not just your standard Log Cabin 5% maple/95% corn syrup or whatever, but "reduced calorie butter flavored pancake syrup" or something. Not even real high fructose corn syrup! Might as well slather on some toxic waste from the chemical plant.

Btw, re: olive oil.

I might well be the only regular poster on OT who has not only harvested olives, but has also made virgin/extra virgin olive oil in presses. :)

Oh god, I've had that butter flavored crap before. I believe they got it by accident. That's what happens when you don't read the label. And yes, it was at the in-laws' house. My own parents always get pure maple syrup.

Lately I've seen several brands of "pancake syrup" available. They are 25% maple syrup. I wonder how good they are. They're cheaper than real maple syrup but more expensive than the processed crap. Good thing is they don't use a ton of weird ingredients, they're just 25% maple and 75% sugar syrup.

Lol, de gustibus non est disputandum and all, but I have to think that many of you saying this are analogous to the many here who have the taste of crappy American commercial "peanut butter" so imprinted on their taste buds and brains that they can't appreciate the clear superiority of "natural" peanut butter.

Also, as many here are saying, B grade maple surple actually has a ton more flavor than grade A, which I prefer.

Ohio does make the best maple syrup, maybe because it's less of an industry and more a labor of love here than it is in Vermont or Canada.

Does it matter? Its all bad for you
just like with anything, the more natural the better though.

Maple syrup is very high in calories, but is an excellent source of the trace mineral manganese, with 2 tbs (13.33 grams) containing about 0.44 mg or 22% of the FDA Daily Value (DV%) of 2 mg.[12] It is also a good source of zinc with 2 tbs (13.33 grams) containing 0.55 mg or 3.7% of the FDA Daily Value (DV%) of 15 mg.[12]

versus the fake stuff which is also high in calories but is mostly made of high fructose corn syrup.

Well, as long as you feel guilty for eating the fake crap, I guess I can go back to respecting you :p
