So you recommend not buying one because you couldn't take it off without damaging your graphics card because it was meant to be stuck on there with a firm grip so it wouldn't come off? Wow.

"wow" what? yeah. that's exactly right. why "wow"?

go do a google search for all the people who've had problems taking this cooler off their card... THEN come back and try to be a dick.

because i tried taking off the after-market vga cooler (the accelero x2) by heating it with a blowdrier, to no avail, and freezing it, also to no avail. so, i used a razor blade to try slicing the little sticky pads that are on the ram modules. i got most of them... so, i pulled and twisted. nothing, but i got a little movement. so, i used some force... viola! a broken x1900xt... busted off two of the ram modules... they remained stuck to the cooler. fvcking neat.

So despite the fact that you knew there was still sticky pads attached, and there was the possibility of damaging it, you went ahead and ripped it off? It's not like a stock heatsink+cooler that's meant to be easily removed. But ok, lets blame the cooler on your video card being damaged. Ignore all common sense!

Wasn?t it in the documentation that it is not recommended that you take it off? Meaning that if you put it on, you better not take it off.

btw, how is that new case working out for you? :D

i don't think so... i wouldn't know because i bought the card with the accelero x2 already on it. the seller shipped it together with the stock heatsink in case i wanted to go back to it. so, that would indicate that it would be possible to take the cooler off.

I have a X2 and I like it. I don't know why I'd ever take it off so I am not concerned.

If you want an easy removal of the heastsink later on, remove the pre-applied stuff and add your own thermal compound that lacks strong adhesive properties.

And when you are trying to remove an adhesive thermal compound, use a strong solvent.

yeah, good to know... too bad it's after the fact :(

common sense tells you that if you have most of sticky pads detached, when you twist, force would detach the other pads because the pads should have a weaker bond than the ram chips have with the card. common sense doesn't tell you that an after-market heatsink will be virtually superglued to your ram chips.

just leave the thread... seriously.

So you pwned yourself, yet I'm a dick because I pointed that fact out? And that you're telling everyone not to buy the cooler despite it being "widely known" as you pointed out (you think you would have read it beforehand, or in the manual like someone else pointed out) that it's not a good idea to try taking it off? That for the actual purpose of what the product is intended for, it's an excellent product, but not to buy it because you pwned yourself?

Oh - common sense would tell you that you obviously misjudged the bond of the pads with the ram chips. But guess I don't need to state that twice.

oh my goddammit...

look, ass, quit talking about common sense because you're too stupid to talk about it... you can't talk about common sense about something BEFORE the incident whenever your conclusion is something that would have been derived AFTER the incident.

also, how the hell is it "widely known" that you're not supposed to ever take the cooler off?

ALSO, it's not an excellent product... if you look at reviews, it's not nearly as good as other, smaller, cooler devices (like those made by thermaltake, zalman, etc.)

When I got my original X1900XTX I considered several aftermarket heatsinks including the Accelero 2 & just about every thread discussing it suggested removing the thermal pads it shipped with & re-using the ones that were included with the factory HS/fan or putting some thermal compound between the Accelero adhesive pads & the RAM chips to prevent this exact thing from happening ... I read this in a couple website reviews of the product as well so its not like the information wasn't available, it was a known issue.

Aside from this problem it was one of the better & quieter cooling solutions for those cards as long as you had sufficient system cooling to compensate for the hot air being dumped back into the case from the GPU ... in fact it finished at or near the top of every GPU HS/fan review I read at the time, overly sticky thermal pads notwithstanding.

OP I feel bad for you in this situation (I once killed a 9800 Pro in similar fashion! ) however all I can suggest is that next time you post a thread here asking for advice about your problem BEFORE trying the "if it jams force it" method!

haha too true... i should have. i've had enough experience, i thought, removing vga hfs that i didn't think i needed to, though.

i would have if i had another card to take it's place... i didn't, though... i was just trying to put the stock cooler back on so it'd fit in my sff case until i sold all the parts from my old system... then, once i had enough for a new card, i'd buy a new card and sell the x1900xt.
